I have a 1940 M with a delco alternator, it fits under the hood very well, although the same type of alternator does not fit very well under the hood of an H.

Probably is enough room. I put one on a super M but I had to modify the adjusting arm and I put a very small washing machine motor belt pulley on it so it would turn faster. I didn't cut the hood. It was a big improvement over the generator.

They fit great you just have to make some changes to the adjusting arm

Another thing to consider is the voltage of the M electrical system. If you go to a 12 volt alternator, you will need to change the rest of the system to 12 volt. I believe all of the pre-super M tractors were 6 volt.

I have been told that an alternator from a Toyota is smaller and much easier to fit. It will do the job.
