Hello, please take the time to read my problem if can help. I have a 1953 Farmall 300. The engine has no smoke. Idles perfect. You can idle it down and up. It seems to sound strong. If i place the tractor in 1st gear its seems ok. Second gear ok if not starting up a hill. 3rd-5th forget it! The engine will "bogg" down and finally die. Reverse acts the same as 1st. It has new spark plugs and wires. I removed the carberator and cleaned it. It made no change. Any help would be apperciated. Thanks, Mike.

I Had to laugh, I just bought a 300 Farmall/McCormik/International today, put my first miles on it just tonight, The family I got it from, (Neighbors) run tractor pulls, every one of the kids are freaking tractor genius's, (theyre running smokers now, but started with M's, Super M's and 300's I just got mine today from the youngest, (18 now) Sat for 8 years at the last owners, It took me 1 hour to get it rolling, I drove it down to their place just to bullshit, Don, (their dad) told me..... ...If you ever have problems with it losing power when you load it? its the woodruff key for the cam, the live hydraulics wears it out, pretty soon it wont hold time under power. He said its happened to every one theyve had. Makes sense, you get enough lash in the cam gear that your timing is bouncing 10-15 degrees from idle to load, I take these guys word for Gospel, the youngest could tear down a gas or diesel at 12 years old, shave the head, put a hotter cam in and win pulls. Im in Hog Heaven here, just stepped up to a 300 today from a case Vac, LOL

Mike:

If the brakes are not stuck and you have good fuel flow, have you check your compression yet? it should have at least 110 psi per cyclinder.
also farmall's have a thick flat washer in the governor that very often have wear stop's or two divits worn into it that wont let the governor arm move when put under load. another thing to check is make sure your governor spring is not to tight. to check the spring and the washer in the governor, just remove the side cover and with a srew driver push the washer fowards and look for the wear spots also the spring should be hanging kind of lose in there. Check your governor by starting the engine, put it at 3/4 throttle, press both brakes down and the engine should bog down for a second and then pick right back up if not then you where to start looking. good luck dan.

What about the points and condesor, have you changed them?Ill bet the points are closed up on iyt due to the wear block being worn out.OR it could be as simple as fuel starvation, enough gets in it to keep it running ok under no load but as soon as you go to a higher gear, there not enough to keep it going.Check the fuel tank, sediment bowl and lines for obstructions."Clean carb aint no good if it aint no gas in it!"

i will check the brakes to be sure. It is stopping straight. Its not pulling to one side when im driving it. it dosent seem to be a dragging brake trying to turn me.

i guess you could try putting it under a load on the PTO. another thought could be a vacume leak (intake manifold)

if you pull the throttle open suddenly does it die? Sounds like a timing problem. with tractor ideling set the distributer so it runs free, then turn clockwise till it just starts to labor. see if this don't help
