What is the difference between a 656 and a 2656. My understanding is that the 2656 is the industrial version of the 656. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all the info guys. I have another question, I just bought an I656 Hydro and am interested to get any comments, suggestions or concerns on the tractor. I will be using it as a loader/snow blower unit.

RJ,

The International 2656 was the industrial version of the International 656. It was basicly a I 656 with standard yellow color (any color could be special ordered), different grille, different front axle (HD, adjustable or fixed available), industrial multi rib front tires and grader tread type rear tires standard (regular and several other tires optional), and a few options not normally found on I 656 (shuttle transmission available, gauge vandal locking covers, different hydraulic options, are a few that come to mind). If hydrostatic I believe it was available with either hand or foot control whereas the I 656 had only hand control if I remember right. Others may remember some other diferences.

What do you mean, Harold, by a shuttle transmission? I have never heard of such a thing. The two trannys I am really familiar with are the M/4460/656 style and the 706-1086 style. Let me know, just curious. Thanks

Tim, I think Harold is talking about the "Fast-Reverser". It was an option on 340, 460, 544, and 656, I think, and possibly other models. Tractors equipped with it would still have the 5-speed, and the Fast-Reverser would be ahead of the trans., where the TA would usally be. Now I've never operated one, or even so much as seen a tractor equipped with the Fast-Reverser, but it is covered in Ken Updike's book "International Harvester Tractors 1955-1985".

KB: It was available in any of the 5 speed IH tractors that could be equiped with TA. It was either- or type of item as it went were TA is. It was slightly faster in reverse. I remember the fast reverser being in 300 literature. So I supose it could be put in MTA. I have seen a few of these in 300 utilities, being used for loader and backhoe work. I saw one of these working one day and decided if I were ever going to do much loader work with a Farmall that was way to go. They would give a power shift a run on loader work. I am not sure whether one had to use clutch, they were quick and no clashing of gears.
