My 1955 300 ran fine the other day, then quit starting. The battery is fully charged and I had the solenoid and starter tested. The starter tested bad, so I got a reman 12 volt starter and installed it. My problem is that now it won't turn over. I think I might have connected the cables and wires wrong, but can't remember how they were originally. Can somebody tell me if I am right in the following:
1. positive cable from battery goes to the large solenoid post
2. red wire from alternator attaches to the same large solenoid post as battery cable
3. small (orange) wire from alternator goes on the small solenoid post
4. solenoid attaches to the large post on the starter.
Does this sound right, or have I got something crossed? Any help would be appreciated. Anything else I should check out? Thanks.

It appears that your tractor has been updated to 12 volt system since you mentioned an alternator and not a generator. My 300 has 12 volt system but would have to check wiring. Also, I have negative ground. From what I have been told 12 volt will not hurt those 6 volt starters. Let me know if you want me to verify my wiring or if I can help. Make sure that the solenoid is not grounding to the starter case. Also check your ground cable and make sure it is tight.

I am not sure about your 300 Jay but mine is a 6 volt system. I doubt if it would like the 12 volts if yours also is 6 volt.Just a thought

Jay,

I'm with Dave on this, our 300 was also a 6 volt, and if my memory serves me correctly it was negative ground.

Good Luck!
