Have a question for all the experienced Farmall collectors. The other day I was messing around with my '58 140, couldn't ask for one to run better, just driving around the farm. When I turned it off everything sounded normal but then it wouldn't start. Hit the starter...just a dull thud. Took the starter off and checked it, ran good, drive was good. Tried rolling it down a hill (waching the fan blade) engine would not turn. Tried pulling it, engine still would not turn. Locked tighter than any I have seen. Finally took a crowbar and moved the flywheel a little then it started and run like a charm! This ever happened to anyone else? It has me baffled.

Did you try to rock the engine backwards ? Could it be a head gasket and water in the cyl ?

Are you saying it was still locked up when you had the starter off, indeed yes you are. Get a light and take a look in the inspection hole by cultch. How does the presure plate look? Any chance fingers from presure plate are hitting carier or linkage for release bearing. My 130 once got tangled up by fingers on presure plate hitting linkage for release bearing. Tractor was running so it just tore things apart. If this happened as you shut down those items could stop the starter.

Next place to look would be a forign object in engine, something broken. Is it making any funnie noises?

Yep, locked up with the starter off. We did pull a pretty good sized mouse nest out of it. (my compliments to my brother!, didn't want to stick my hand in there) Tried pulling it forward and backwards, still watching the fan blade, didn't move. Checked the pressure plate as best I could and everthing looked normal. I wasn't there when my brother did the crowbar act but he said he moved it just a little bit then tried the starter. Started right up and hasn't given any more problems. GT

I'm in Strathroy, Ontario. If the tractor is working without making any unusual noise, I wouldn't worry too much. Lets face it nothing broke up inside the engine or you would be hearing noise. What ever happened obviously didn't damage anything. Tractors really don't heal all that well.
