I'm thinking about buying a farmall cub and then purchase a sickle bar mower to keep down brush in a ditch. Does the sickle bar on a cub go past 90 degrees, and say, and mow on an angle down into the ditch? Is there any defect inherit to cubs like being welded in a certain area? Thanks!

Thanks to all who responded! After reading the FAQ I think I'll stick a haban sickle mo on my IH cub cadet. The yard is really soft and I think the weight of the Farmall Cub would cause me more problems than it would solve. Thanks again!

if you set the wheels all the way out you will have a very stable machine.Too many to count were sold in WV with sickles for this reason. I have dual wheels on mine with the front wheels set in to 40". It will go on a hillside where I can't walk across, if too steep the oil pressure drops and then the tractor slides will not tip even running over tree roots. It is what I would use for a ditch, or else get an older Gravely l model 30" deck with duals or triples and a steering sulky not a riding sulky.

The bar will drop slightly below horizontal. Here's the link to the FAQ.

Mike: You can get sickle mowers for the cub that will go past horizontal for ditch work--it's more a function of the mower than the tractor. Hundreds of cubs were used this way by road crews in their heyday. As far as specific spots to look for welds on a cub, they're about the same as most tractors--check the obvious places such as final drives, block cracks (particularly in the bottom corners on the front and back) and the front spindles, which are a bit light for use as a loader tractor (though it didn't stop many intrepid souls from attaching them). Also, the high, offset design of the cub makes some sidehill work a touch hairy, so use caution.

Thanks Tim, I need to re-think this as the ditch is deep, filled with water, and has soft sides. Maybe the cub isn't what I need.

Mike: I'd be inclined to agree with you. Depends on your tolerance for fear and your supply of clean underwear, but you're probably better off with something that you can control a bit better. I love my Cub, but it's set up with a belly mower, and I wouldn't want to use it on steep hillsides, such as the typical ditch bank.

Mr. E., I went there and didn't see anywhere to click on the FAQ. However I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed so any help is appreciated.
