I just had my clutch rebuilt, but it still grinds when shifting at higher rpms..I have tried lengthening/shortening rod, but it grinds either way...one way it grinds, and won't move tractor...any thoughts on what i did wrong, and how i can fix, without splitting apart again...also, I posted message for ih sheet metal, etc..but lost all e-mails of people..please contact if you have parts avail. still.

Dean,
This is an old post but I have a similar problem with gears grinding. Typically gears start to grind after I let it idle a bit when out of gear. My tranny leaks like a civ and after changing out hytran fluid I only put 6 gal back in. I read in another post that I need approx. 12 gal in the tranny for IH 240U. So topping off the hytran may do it and I'm gonna give that a shot this wkend. Let me know if you ever figured out a solution to this problem.

Ya'll beat me to it. I was thinking clutch plate in backwards and problem with the pilot bushing too. I'll bet one of them is it. For anyone else reading this don't EVER replace a clutch and not do the pilot. I got my super c real real cheap after the original owner replaced the clutch disk pressure plate flywheel and throwout on it and it still wouldn't work. The pilot was worn out. It cost me 4 dollars to fix and boy was he mad. Also I use 85-140 in the rear. It stops the gears from spinning real quick. With the temps I have been operating in I am sure it helps too but I have used the tractor at temps down to 20 below in pennsylvania and no problems there either.

My 140 and 240 do the same thing. I just charged it off as the flywheel effect of the input shaft. On these tractors, the input shaft and gears are mostly above the oil level. On tractors like the Famall H, the input shaft drives the lower shaft which is submersed on oil. The input shaft on the 240 does drive the oil slinger gear which is submersed and maybe a heavier oil would help provide more drag. I just idle mine down before putting it in gear.

Dean,
The grinding is caused by some sort of drag. Either on the clutch face or on the pilot bushing. If it comes from the pilot bushing, it could be dry (of grease) or damaged such that it is binding on the input shaft. Either way you need to split it again to check. If it's dry, just stick your finger in with a dob of grease on it, and also coat the end of the inut shaft.

If it's the clutch face, then lengthening the clutch rod should give you more release, but that sounds like you allready tried that to the point where the clutch was allways slightly dis-engaged (since it would not move the tractor). So I would vote toward the pilot bushing.
Stan(VA).

PS- how heavy is the oil in your tranny case? Since there's always a limited amount of drag at the pilot bushing, the gear lube provides a little necessary drag to stop the input shaft from spinning.

Stan, Real good point on tranny fluid. I dont own a IH240 would love to have one but no room. Anyway I some how managed to let my tranny lube get a little low in my A and was experiencing some gear grinding. Topped tranny fluid off to side plug with 75-90W and made grinding problem much better.

You probably did not replace the pilot bearing of lube it did you. Worn and dry pilot bearings can cause problems.
