I have never owned a Farmall but used to see a lot around when we farmed. I feel I would like to purchase and restore a Farmall. I now have two tractors I have restored and use. What I have is a John Deere 1948 Model A and an Allis Chalmers 1948 model WD. I work both of them.

I kind of like the Farmall H or M but know nothing about them really.

I would appreciate some ideas from you folks, pros and cons to each model etc. Want a tractor about equal to the two I have as far as working ability.

Any ideas or info appreciated.

Dave

I go with a M. I had a H that I redid. A JD 70 Diesel followed me home redid that. Then got a M and believe me the H was gone in a hurry. You will have no complaints with the M. Lot easier lugging things around and is three times the tractor the H is. I still don't miss the H. The M is almost done! A few weeks be in tractor photos! Then it will be time to find another poor old pup to follow me home.HaHaHa!

Thanks everyone!
Getting one of each is a swell idea but then I'd need to get a new wife and that would cost even more!! Will have enough trouble sneaking in a red one! Although, to her, it isn't the color that she notices anyway! A tractor is a tractor and why do I "NEED" another one?

Dave: One item about wives, they seem to stop noticing after you reach the 1/2 dozen mark. I wouldn't want to suggest they can't count further. No, I believe they just give up realizing there is no hope.

Just tell her that you know a guy in Iowa who has only 1.75 acres and has 5 tractors to work it with and his wife is o.k. with that as long as she can still park her car in the garage.

i was told here wonce by an older farmer here that if he could have it on the property for three days without her seeing it when she did and asked how long it had been there he would say, that one, oh that has been here so long that i dont even remember when i got it. if that dont work. than buy here a farmall A. she will love it and all will be better. or something like that.

The A JD would fit right inbetween the H and M Farmall. Probably closer to the M, but I believe a 1948 M would out pull a 1948 JD A. The H and M are relatively easy to work on. I don't anticipate that you would have any trouble based on your work record. The H and M are very simular as far as there style and the way they are built virtually different just in size. The M is larger in scale. They were a pretty solid tractor. Just like all the rest. Needed overhauled after so many hours. Some wear points to look for would probably be play in the steering, cogs on the throttle wore down, and so on. But hay, as old as they are getting, you are going to find some wear, as well as things just plain neglected. Should be able to find a good fixer upper H for $500 to $700 in my area (Midwest). One fairly fixed up for around $1000 to $1200. A couple or 300 more for an M.

The Farmall H and M are about as straight forward to work on as you will find anywhere.
Either one will fit right in with what you already have, and if you can work on either of the other two, The Farmalls will be a breeze.
The M is a bigger, more powerfull tractor, but the H is a very nimble and handy machine to have around.
Maybe you should get one of each?

An M would fit right in with your A and WD I worked on all three back in the 60's. I here maney guys say they like the old JD because they are easy to work on I think they are much harder to work on than an M or H. But M and H are not hard to work on as far as machanics go very straight forward just need to remember how it came apart and put back togeather in reverce.

I have an old farmall M, we had fuel problem, well we had sand blasted the fuel tank to pant and we fill the tank up with water so it wouldn't blow up, well after that there had been rust in it, we did not run the tractor with rust in it, this tractor had sat about a year before we done ant work on it and now it is stuck, a gut told me to pour diesle down the cylinder where the spark plugs go i tried that it didn't work, we towed it down the road slow and poped the clutch a few times thought that might break it loose didn't work either DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT I MIGHT TRY NEXT BEFORE I PAY A SHOP TO WORK ON IT

Thanks for your comment on the M. Any special problems to look for as far as mechanical condition? I am a pretty decent mechanic and tore down and rebuilt the JD and the AC so that is not a problem. Most tractors have their troublesome areas so just wondering about what wears usually on the M. I don't mean like rings and such but things like not staying in gear etc.

Also, while I have your attention :-) what is an average price these days for an M or super M?

Dave
