I replaced the original pistons with high compression, 1/8th overbore sleeves. Now when the mag is shut off, it continues to fire for 5 seconds or so. I believe the timing is ok, is there anything else to look at ? thanks for any help.

I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned -- Pull out the choke. Works 99% of the time on my M. No air, no fire. Since my M will almost always diesel, I pull out the choke just as I turn off the ignition, not after it starts to diesel. Apparantly, it uses up the fuel-air mixture as it dies.

I usually just turn off my gas supply. Accomplishes two things: kills engine and runs carburator out of gas.

Another thing to try that has worked for me is to run a cold sparkplug. The recommended sparkplug for your tractor was optimum 50 some years ago. Thing have changed, gasoline, engine compression, etc. Probably what is happening inside your engine is that the electrodes are "glowing", so when the engine is shut off, the electrodes are still hot enough to ignite the gasoline. A colder plug will eliminate this. You might want to try a set of sparkplug adapters with automotive platinum plugs. I have and they work great!

Ours does the same thing..... ....everything is set up to a "T" and it still likes to diesel..... ..I could let it idle the whole day after working it, go to shut it down and it would still do it..... I just usually let it idle about 3-5 min and then kill it, have it in gear and let the clutch out while it dies..... ....Have the other foot on the brakes to make sure it won't "Take off".....

Running on is pretty much normal in your situation. Attibute it to the combination of high compression pistons and the poor quality nolead gas sold today.

A few things that can help: Adjust the carb idle mix just a bit rich (1/8 turn) from ideal. Set the idle RPM as low as possible. Idle motor for a minute or two at low idle before hitting the kill switch. Run higher octane (premium) gas instead of regular. (Note - changing ignition timing does NOT affect running on, since by definition the ignition is off when it occurs).

If all else fails, put the tractor in high gear and partially engage the clutch as you hit the kill switch. That'll stop the motor instantly!

Jon: I see a number of possibilities running too hot, you have taken it to 123 cu in and they all had water pumps. A distributor ignition could correct, as you could control the advance. The one certain item is heat as heat is causing it to diesel and that is precicely what it is doing after you cut the ignition. Do you let it idle couple of min to let it cool a bit? If not do so.

I believe the high compression pistions caused the problem ie. dieseling. I am not sure of a soloution though.
