H steering woes

Rebuilt my 48 H's upper bolster a couple weeks ago and after driving it this weekend the frt end wobbled worse. Installed new bushings,thrust bearing etc. Re-looked it all tonite. Found a little play in the u-joint-gonna replace. Also saw worm gear pushing sector gear off to the side before turning. The pivot shaft must be worn and the new bushing didn't tighten it up. Any suggestions? I've seen used ones but I figure it would be a crap shoot getting one thats not worn like mine. Anyone had luck having the shaft built up and machined back to specs? Whatever that is? Thanks, Mike In Southern Wisconsin

An aluminum pop can make a pretty good shim. If you need 2 layers you will have to cut a slot out of the bushing so it can contract enough. I would check the front rims to see if they are bent. They have fooled a lot of people and no amount of new parts will stop the shimmy.

Mike - I encountered the identical problem on my Super H. I came up with a cheap solution - not as elegant as building up and remachining the pivot shaft, but it did the trick:

First I knocked the upper bushing back out of the fixed bolster. Then I inserted a piece thin shim stock between the busing bore in the casting and the OD of the bushing shell when driving the bushing back in. I cut the shim so it fit around half the circumference of the bushing, and oriented it so it was on the left side of the tractor. Adding the shim effectively moved the sector gear closer to the worm, and it tightened the bushing around the (worn) pivot shaft bearing surface. This eliminated the radial play at the sector gear. The tractor now steers great - no play at all.

Finding the right thickness of shim stock was a trial and error process - think I wound up using .007".

I bought an after market upper bolster pivot shaft(new) maybe 20 years ago for my H. My H has been in storage for most of that time and only the last few months I have been working on it. I had the IH dealer rebush it when I put the pivot shaft in. I just put new seals , thrust bearing and a used worm gear in mine . It is pretty tight. I am telling you everything I did because I found now that I had to put a washer between the sector gear and castle nut in order to get the cotter pin to contact the castle nut. My upper bolster is not warn but either the taper was machined a little off or the hole should have been drilled a little lower. What I am getting at is I don't think my after market pivot shaft was the best quality. When i restore my tractor, I will either buy an IH one or get my old one (that I saved 20 years ago ) rebuilt. Either way, I hope to get one that fits a little better. I know that it will cost $$$. I would go aftermarket if I was told by someone that really, really, really knows Farmalls and had good luck with an aftermarket one. Mine was I guess a "will fit " one. Just my 2 cents worth.
