I have a IH 434 (british made, from Canada)I replaced the battery about a month ago, the old battery (dated 1986) was put in negative ground, the tractor is supposed to be a positive ground, I put the new battery in negative ground (it had been working well for years). Recently was working with the lights on for a few hours, the next day the battery was dead. Now, it will die after 10 - 30 minutes and the battery is not charging. I can jump it immediately (portable jumper) and it will run fine for a short time and die again. Where do I start to find the problem. Thanks in advance for all help (again!!)
Jack

If that tractor has a generator then you need to repolazie it so it charges the battery for you.
If not it will not charge. by polarizing it, it tell the current which way to flow. Have you tried to hook it up negative ground to see if it charges? if so put it positive ground and polarize the generator. What does your amp metter say when it is running???

Does the tractor have an alternator or generator ?
If it has an alternator hooking up the battery backwards will short out and fry the diodes in the alternator.

Jack,
I would start with the battery. If the old battery was working for years and you simply replaced it, it sounds like the battery you installed has a problem. I would pull the battery and take it to a shop or dealer for a load test. It sounds like it has at least 1 shorted cell.
