H lift-all, belly pump questions

I'm trying to resurrect the belly pump in a '47 H I recently purchased. The history is unknown but upon first engaging the lift-all, I briefly got a pressure reading of 450 and some brownish oil to leak out. My questions are:

1) Should I attempt a kerosine or solvent flush before giving the lift-all its initial 30W non-detergent oil fill?

2) Is it O.K. to have all the ports capped off with only the pressure gauge stuck in a bushing to the outlet elbow on the left?

3) I expect I'll have to do some rebuilding of the unit. I'll check the components to the I&T specs but, do most rebuilds simply involve replacing the gaskets?

4) The jump to 750-800 PSI is said to occur in 'later models'. Does anyone know the year or serial number this happened?

5) If my model is the 450-500 PSI version, where do I go to get the parts to modify it to the 750-800 PSI version? Is it simpler to look for a replacement pump unit?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I took the belly pump out of my H and cleaned it out and got a new spring to raise the pressure up to 800# at my CIH dealer. Works great.

Thanks for the info - that looks like the ticket. When you say 'clean it out', I imagine that involved disassembly - which doesn't look all that difficult. What seals/gaskets did you need to fabricate or replace?

Dave, I sure don't remember if I replaced any gaskets or not but I usually make my own gaskets unless they are a special thickness. I do remember that the CIH dealer had everything I needed for the pump. If I remember right (that was a few years ago) I only replaced the relief valve spring and relief valve ball. Yes I took it completely apart and cleaned everything and checked it for wear. (I also added the 2 way valve.) See page 82 of the I&T Shop Service manual for the belly (lift-all) pump service. Now I am thinking of putting a live pump from my dad's 300 on the H but I haven't come up with a relief valve for it yet. Good luck with your pump!
