560 Farmall pto wont stop spinning ,when shut off

The clutch type I am familiar with was adjusted truough the fill cap hole with a special tool you have to get from IH. My experience with this one is if you can't stop it from turning it is time for a rebuild. I did a lot of heavy work with my pto and thus found myself rebuilding it every 2-3 years. Now my 560 was also operating at 90+ hp which didn't help either. It also clocked 11,000 hours in 16 years, and probably 65% of that was on forage harvester or blower.

You have to also remember these pto units in all the number series tractors of the late 1950s and early 60s were pioneering in live pto for IH. I had one of each series of Farmalls all the way from letter series to the 66 series. Live pto for IH came of age with the 06 series tractors.

When our 300 was new and the main power source,on farm we rebuilt that pto every 3-4 years The 560 was actually worse although I wouldn't throw all that blame on pto. What I meant by saying PTO came of age with the 06 tractors is by then IH had most of the kinks out of these PTO units. The PTO on 06, 56, 66 and even 86 series tractors were practically trouble free in for 15 years from new. The only one of the later ones I ever rebuilt was 656 but tractor was 18 years old with 12,000 hours at the time. If you looked around at other makes they were also having their problems with live pto. It just took ten years to iron out the kinks. The industry at that time had never put that much power through such a small unit with engageing clutches, planetaries, etc all contained in the unit, it just took time to evolve.
