I've got an H that's giving me problems. With the throttle lever pushed up all the way, the tractor is at idle, but when I pull it back less than half way, it's already at wide open. This makes it very hard to keep the tractor at a speed in between. I don't know a whole lot about it, so any helpfull feedback is greatly appreciated.

Check the bell crank on top of the engine. If you put it on backwards it will cause this . Ours was this way for years . then i took it apart and found it worked much better when i turned it around.

I don't mean to sound dumb, but I'm not sure what you mean by a bell crank.

It is the part that connects the upper rod from the throttle lever to the lower rod that goes to the governor.

Sounds like you may have a governor problem;
Is your throttle control lever an original style or aftermarket type?

It's the original 1949 lever that came on the tractor.
