Convert 300 to 12volt system ??

My 1955 Farmall 300 seems to turn over very slowly even with a new 6v battery. As a result it is very difficult and slow to start. Is this typical of 300s? Is it advisable to convert to a 12 volt system? If so where do I start? The guy that sold it to me had an 8 volt battery in it. Nobody around here has ever heard of an 8 volt battery and as result I can't even get it charged. I haven't been able to start it since last summer and my farmer neighbor suggests starting it using a jump from a 12 volt source. He says it won't hurt anything if I only do this on a limited basis to get it started initially. Is this advisable?.
Any advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

A common mistake many people do is that they substitute 12 volt battery cables for the existing 6 volt cables. Six volt cables are heavier and have less voltage drop at the higher currents. Check your cables first - ensure they are the nice heavy cables you would find in a 6 volt system. While doing this, clean all connections completely. If the ground cable is bolted to the frame, undo this bolt and clean everything. The tractor frame. The cable terminal. The bolt. Hidden corrosion is the usual culbrit.

One last thing to look at is the starter itself. You might have worn brushes or bad bearings.

Two other items: Yes, 8 volt batteries do exist. As you've found, locating a charger for them is more difficult. Finally, converting to 12 volts is no big deal. I would not do it simply to mask another problem, though.

Yeah, I would try cleaning everything up and maybe putting a booster charge on the 6 volt battery before I would spend $100 converting to a 12 volt system. The 6 volt system should work fine if everything is like it's supposed to be. Your starter may be dragging and need cleaning. Check out an operator's manual. And it's OK to jump it with 12 volts, just don't leave the jumper cables hooked up too long.

the pto clutch can bind and make the engine turn over hard too. fairly easy to adjust. can use "seasonal disconnect" to disconnect pto from engine for diagnosis. jumping on 12v won't hurt it. most important thing is to have all battery connections clean on both ends of the cables. ground point on those tractors is in the seat/battery box. very poor spot in my opinion. could run a cable from the ground to one of the starter bolts. maybe your starter needs some attention. if you've never had it checked, would be a good idea, then you will know when the last time wear parts were replaced. good luck

What size battery and starter cables are on it? Is the ground cable getting a good ground to the frame? We had a similar problem on our 'C'. We replaced the cables with 1 gauge battery cables and then instead of hooking the ground to the steering pedestal, we hooked it up to the hydraulic resevoir and now the 6 volt battery spins it over like we had a 12 volt battery in it.
