I added a reply to my other thread, but because of the design of this BB it kinda gets lost, so I would try posting a new thread-
The tractor started immediatly, ran decent with some gray smoke for about 20 min, until it died. Let it cool for 45 min, came back started alright, barely ran with no smoke, just long enough to get it into the shed. Last time I was out there the tractor did the same thing, only it quit sooner, and it was hotter than it was this time. There is plenty of water and oil, new sparkplugs. One thing worth mentioning is that it has been converted to battery ignition, the coil is a automotive generic 6/12v. I'm thinking that the problem is ignition related, considering that the coil is quite hot by the time the tractor quits. Could it be a head gasket, and the white smoke is from water in cylinder? Any suggestions are more than welcome cause I'm goin back down tomorrow to see if I can finish getting the garden plowed, allowing half a day to get the tractor in good enough running shape. Thanks again, hopefully someday I will be able to contribute and return the favors ya'll are doing me now.
BTW-It already has a somewhat modern 3pt hitch, so I'm on a not too hurried search for a bush hog that will fit it.

From what you've said - my first guess would be the coil. If it's running hot, you're probably supplying it too much voltage -- and so it supplies less and less spark until the engine dies. Try getting a 1.8 to 2.0 ohm ballast resistor rated at 35 to 50W and sticking it inline from the igntion switch to the coil. That should keep the coil running cooler and the tractor running longer.

You say gray then white smoke. Those are two different indicators. Gray usually means too lean - make the mixture a bit richers by unscrewing the main jet on the carb a bit. White smoke, you're right, is water, or steam coming off and that could be a headgasket.

First thing you might test is the voltage going to the coil. It's either 12 to 14 or 6 to 7.5 or so. If the two terminals on the primary side of the coil measure >3.0 ohm, it wants 12 volts. If the terminals meausure around 2 ohms, it wants 6 volts. Next do a compression test at cranking speeds to see if any of the cylinders is greatly different than the others - which might indicate a blown headgasket. Also check for water in the oil.

My guess is that it's the coil, but best to be safe and check for the headgasket as well. Good luck with it!

I had suggested to a friend of mine the lack of a ballast resistor as a potential problem cause I knew what the lack of one would do on a Land Cruiser and he looked at me like I was from outer space. Both my grandfather and I think its the coil as well, I'll buy a ballast resistor, hook that up, and replace the coil. Thanks a lot.
