I'm gonna be riding my 46A in the July 4th parade this thursday. This will be a first. What gear and throttle speed do most of you guys use to keep a normal marching/walking pace. I haven't had the time to take her out on the road and experiment, and I don't want to screw up in the middle of the parade. Any suggestions? .... I'm thinking something like 2nd gear and low to mid throttle will do it. Thanks!

Avoid clutching as much as possible. Sometimes you are better off to use a lower (not too slow) gear and use the throttle, than to continually "ride" the clutch on the tractor. Leave a little room in front of you too, makes the parade last longer for the people watching.

Hello everybody, I parade every chance I can with my 51 J D "A", when I go, usually 3rd gear and between 1/2 to 1/4 throttle, lots of hand clutch usage, cause of the stop and go.3rd works good and you can adjust throttle as you need. I have a 25 foot Gooseneck with a dolly that I built to go under trailer so tractor can pull it, really enjoy it, would post a pic of it but don't know how, but will see if i can post it in tractor photos

I run my B in first. I always keep correct interval and vary speed with throttle. Sometimes wide open. We are in hilly country and usually pull a loaded wagon so use lower gear and heavy throttle for safety.

I was just clocking my '47 A this evening so that I'd know what gear/throttle position to run at the speed-limited antiques pulls. Used a handheld GPS, by the way. On mine, 3/4 throttle in 2nd gear is between 3 and 3-1/2 mph.

I too will be in my first parade Friday. Hard to tell what gear to go in. I'm thinking I'll start out in second and see where i need to keep throttle. If I need to stop and get into third or whatever so I can be between 1/3 and 2/3 throttle so be it. Everyone does everything for the first time sometime. Pretty philisophical, huh? Wrong spelling I know..... Good Luck and Have FUN!!!!! !!!!!

Doug, it varies so much that there is no way to say what is right. There may be some parades that run at a constant speed, but I've never been in one. For instance, I ran my B in the Red Power Parade through Bloomsburg Saturday, and the speed varied from dead stop to 4th gear. That's unusual I know, and it was because of the traffic at intersections wasn't stopped completely, but you will have to just run it and see what works.
