I have a 1950 M that I recently purchased. Runs great as long as you don't crowd the throtle. This problem was only minor at first during the 10 miles in which I drove it home but became worse everytime I ran it in the following week. Anyway I have cleaned the fuel system and removed the carb and dismantled it, placing it in Chem-dip. I counted turns on all screws that were removed. My main question being: Are there any hard fast rules on setting up this carb from scratch should I have something out of adjustment when I go back up with it.

Set that float RIGHT.Unless you did anything other than remove it,like bend the tang or drop it or something, that should be ok.Screw adjustn=ments are pretty much feel and smoke.Adjsut til it feels right and dont smoke!Thers technical specs on it,but hey after 53 yrs something has got ot be different if only slightly.

Travis,

I think CNKS has given you the straight skinny on the carb below. If you've gotten it way out of wack, though, best to read the smoke. If the exhaust is making a blackish kind of smoke -- too rich, turn in that main jet. If it's gray to white -- too lean, more fuel flow by turning out the jet screw. The best way to set carb jetting is with an exhaust gas temp gauge - go for around 1100 degrees on a tractor.

Also, just a possibility, when's the last time you set the ignition timing, or checked the plugs?
Retarded igntion and fouled plugs might cause the problems you're having.

Uuhh, no, the screws have nothing to do with the float. Starting position for the main jet screw is about 3 turns off the seat. Then with the engine warm, turn it in until it begins to run rough, then out until it runs smooth. The manual says set the idle speed to 425 rpm (just set it so that it doesn't die), then adjust the idle mixture the same way you did the main jet. Only difference is that turning the main jet screw in leans the mixture, turning the idle screw in richens the mixture. You may need a carb kit, it comes with instructions.
