I'm looking for a different tractor to plant with and am leaning towards an IH. They seem pretty reliable. Have a Case now and the dealer never seems to have parts and a Deere is too pricey. What is my best bet for 75-100 hp, dsl, and wide front, no cab.

JW, I'm a little confused. Wouldn't your Case dealer also be the one you would go to for IH parts? Or do they just carry a better selection on IH parts?

Our local dealer has been IH for over fifty years, they have anything for an F-20 to a Magnum, but they HATE Case and stock little more than a poor selection of oil and fuel filters.

Sounds like you have a great place for all sorts of information. They may be able to tell you what you want to know, or if anyone is selling anything used. Good luck. -Bill

YOub didnt mention how many rows you are planting, but regardless, an "M" will handle 4 rows fine except that it will work you to death, compared to some of the later models. I agree with Hugh, that an 8 or above 56 model will do just about what you want up to 8 rows. We use a 1456 on 8 row no till, which requires a lot of power, and it does great. Suggestion #2: Go diesel. It will cost a bit more to buy a diesel, but you will sure save it back on fuel cost.

I agree with Hugh again. 56's are the best. 66's are second. Planted for years with a 706 but the offset reverse shifts much better on the 56 & 66. Takes a little more maintenance to keep the front end of a 66 tight. I would rather plant with an M than an 86 though!

Scott: I don't know as could go so far as to say M over 86. The M was a great old tractor in it's day. As I get older comfort becomes very important, and lets face it you want an M with comfort you go 656, 666 or 686. I'll bet you never stopped to think about it but some parts between the old M and 686 are interchangable.

You are right again Hugh an M with a charlyn steering unit still steers much harder than a 686 not even counting live hyds. and hyd brakes

JW: Farmalls were all good planting tractors, however in the hp range you want 806, 856, 966, 986. My pick would be the 856. 56 series IH were definately best IH ever built. I had a new one from just about every series from letter to 66, and 56 will get my vote every time. They are functional, fuel efficient, very durable, comfortable to drive. There are 56 series tractors pushing 25,000 hours and going strong.
