Is there a way to tell if my generator is charging too much from the amp. gauge. It charges more on high charge, as soon as I put it on low charge it charges less. I was wondering what should the gauge be reading on low? It seems to be working ok but with my luck who knows. Lol. Thanks.

Thanks guys! I put a voltage gauge on it from my starter load tester, I know that it isn't the best one. Running I got 7.9 volts and maybe 6 A on the tractor amp gauge. On high I got 10 A. Am I ok?

7.9 appears to be a little bit high. You will know for sure if your battery starts using water. Something around 7.0 to 7.3 would be a little better. You said your meter is not that accurate, so you might be in good shape. You might be worse off, too. A few tenths of a volt is critical to a battery. You really should be down near the 7.0 end of the scale.

I use a Fluke digital and I'm happy with it. When I did aircraft electrical systems with it, calibration was an FAA requirement. Everytime I had this meter certified, it was well within specs. The average do-it-yourself person may not wish to drop $300 for a meter, though. You might look around and see if you can find a mechanic or an electronic technician who has a good digital meter. If you can borrow it for five minutes, you'll know where you stand.

Sounds like you have a cutout relay, and not a regulator. The problem with the cutout, is you never know if you are charging too much or not enough. The result is shortened battery life. Best thing is to replace the cutout relay with a regulator and eliminate having to adjust the charging rate with the switch.

Here is where a voltmeter has an advantage over an ammeter. With a 6 volt system, you should have between 6.9 and 7.2 volts at the battery, with the engine running. With a 12 volt system, you should have between about 13.8 and 14.5 volts.

The highter these voltages above the norm, the more water your battery will use.

If the battery is fully charged, and the tractor is running at wide open throttle, you should see about 2-3 amps charge at the low setting.
I am not sure on the high setting, but maybe about 10 amps.
