Water Leak on M

I just noticed on the tractor that I just bought (1940 M) that water is leaking from where a bolt used to be that holds the lifter cover on the left side of the tractor. My guess is that someone tried to drill out a stripped bolt and went to far. They filled the hole with putty and painted it red. Problem is that it leaks. All of the other alternating bolts are in place and look fine. I have not removed the cover yet to assess damage. Question is: Is this a major deal? What would cause water to leak from there and is it repairable? It was enough to convince the wife that this was the right thing to get. Harder to break bad news if this is a major repair. Help.

Thanks for your help. I feel much better about it. Still learning about these old tractors so don't really know where everything is. An old farmer was by and told me that was a lifter cover. Glad to know that it is the water header cover. Would make more sense for water to leak from there. Again thanks for your help. I'm sure this is just the first of many questions!

The bolts are 5/16" dia x 5/8" inch long. Remove the other bolts and the water jacket. If the bolt is broken off, you can very carefully drill it out with progressively larger drill bits, and chip it out once you get close to the threads. Hard to get the bit centered so be careful. If indeed the bolt is missing and the threads are shot, you should be able to use a 3/8" or at most a 7/16" tap (if there is room) after the proper size bit. The tap will be marked as to the proper size drill bit. Don't think this is a major repair, just takes a little time. May be a good time to flush out the cooling system. the water jacket will be corroded and full of holes (read rotten). Case-IH still has them.

If you are talking about the left side as you are sitting on the seat, then the cover you mentioned is the water header cover, not the lifter cover. Drain the radiator, and remove the cover, then you can see what you are dealing with, if indeed you have a broken off bolt, or stud, then the problem becomes a bit more sticky, but still not impossible to remedy, you might want to enlist the help of a friend who is adept at these things.
It is not uncommon for these old tractors to leak in this area, should not be expensive at all to repair.
