Hi Tom,

Being in the UK I can't help with the value (although I bought my '79 484 for 1000GBP). But I can tell you it's a great little tractor. I had a David Brown 850 until I found the 484 earlier this year. I really like the synchro gears, indep. PTO and hydraulics, power steering, etc. Makes mowing much better/more fun.
It did have a cab, that I've removed (as I don't go out when it's wet/cold), and it was generally a bit rough. But I've had most of it repainted and put new turf tyres on the front and it looks great. Starts every time. This winter it's going to get new sleeves/pistons as there's a fair bit of blow-by coming from the crankcase breather. But it's done nearly 4000hrs, so yours should be good for many years to come.
Just change the oils and enjoy!

Tom: I have never had one, although I had two neighbors with them. They have got to be one of the toughest little tractors ever built. Both the tractors I am aware of were worked damn hard, very limited maintainence, jumped off in fall, left outside all winter and never started, yet they just kept running and running. Neither of them had loaders on them. One guy had a low bush blueberry harvester for his, some of those blueberry fields in Eastern Canada are damn steep. That little 484 went trip for trip around the field with a Ford 4610 and Kubota 7950 both 4x4. and all with the same mounted blueberry harvester.

We used to call the 484 the mountain goat. It wouldn't climb quite as steep hill as the 4x4s would but it was close. On side hill I think it was better. I ran the Kubota some and the chalange was to get as many boxes of berries per trip around field as the little IH could. I tied him one day but never beat him.

Good tractor. My brother has a 495D with the 3 cylinder 179D German build Diesel. The 179D will run for ever, even if it is only slightly maintained. I believe the 495 is the same as 484 but slightly newer. Some don'ts:
Becareful of parking brake, do not leave it engaged or the hydraulic/transmission will be contaminated with brake lining.
Don't put a 2250 quick attach loader on it. The 2250 is to heavy for the front end of this tractor. Find a FREY or some other lighter loader. Enjoy

Going From an 8n to a 484 is like going from a bicycle to a Harley. We have had our since new, real workhorse. Between 8 to 10 grand around here in east Tn. depends on condition. No problems, replaced two clutches since 85, we use it with a loader and a Vermeer baler.
