I have two H's; both have similar wear on the narrow front, but one, even though I've rebushed the steering shaft and rotated the steering sector gear and checked the wheel bearings, insists on trying to break into a shimmey. I understand this used to be a problem with them, but I cannot see why one does, and one doesn't. help.

Take your bolster lid off and turn the steering shaft slowly with the wheels on the ground . You will pro0bably see the whole bolster shaft try to move back and forth with pressure.

A firend who ran Farmalls for years told me once that you can stop the shimmy by running one front tire pressure about 5# less than the other. Haven't tried it myself but he claims it works.

Alan - A couple possibilities:

1 - Slack in other steering parts (worn worm, worn worm shaft bearing/bushing, sloppy U-joints). Check these parts on your H - often the combination of a bit of slack from each component results in enough total slack to mess up the steering.

2 - Improper caster to the lower bolster. Some Farmall NF tractors have a wedge-shaped shim between the flanges of the lower bolster and the pivot. The wedge angles the lower bolster closer to vertical reducing steering caster. This reduces steering wheel effort, but can make the front end more prone to shimmy. Check to see if your tractor has a wedge - if it does, remove and see if steering improves. Punch below for a shot of the shim that I found on my NF Super H - note the word "FRONT" cast on the thin side!
