I am looking at buying my first Farmall, it is a 53 or 54 Super A, I just would like to know what makes these tractor more popular than an A?

Parker: Hydraulics is number one no question. Personally I like the distributor ignition on most Super A better. I say most as there are some Super As with Mags. All of the As were mag ignition from factory.

You also say 53-54. If it is a 54 and after serial number 356001 it will be a Super A1. Only 1,957 of these ever built. They have C-123 engine as oposed to C-113. As well the Super A1 will have factory water pump, beefed up hydraulics and improved brakes. Don't confuse A1 with IA being the Industrial Super A. The Super A1 is actually same as Farmall 100 with Super A sheet metal.

Parker: Those numbers are all in the range of 53-54 Super A serial numbers, however the ones with R5 and R6 are part numbers. The serial number should be on the left seat support, just above where it bolts to transmission case. It is on a tag rivited to seat support. The engine serial number should be just below no. 1 spark plug on a raised and machined surface about 2" long and 1/2" high. These are stamped in and not very deep so be careful. Apparently if you scrape too hard you can remove numbers. The engine and tractor serial numbers should be quite close. On my Super A they are the same. Apparently on assembly line they didn't always get engine in order with rest of tractor.
