As some know I have a Super A with a woods belly mower on it. Have used it hard for the last 5 years, and love it. I would put it up against any new tractor/ mower. This year when putting it on when tightening the belt it broke the belt - no problem it was several years old.
Next time to mow the grass the center spindle broke taking the belt with it. I purchased a shop press, disassembled the assembly put in a new spindle new belt and back to mowing.
Then the bearing on one of the ideler pulleys froze, yep ruined the belt. Credit the parts man who suggested replacing both the ideler bearings at the same time. Made sense to me so I did. Good thing I had the shop press.
Ok now this week the bearings went out on the left spindle and of course another belt ruined. Went ahead and replaced left and right spindel bearings. and the belt.

In all this belt changing I seen to have lost the knack for the twists to get the belt right, you know 1/2 twist here 3/4 twist there put it on one time ant it is wrong next time will be right. What am I doing wrong?

At the end of my belt Jerry

I used to have a Woods mower on a 140 Farmall. As I recall, the manual says to use oil, not grease in the spindle bearings. Of course the idler bearings are sealed. I used oil in mine (had to rig a grease gun to use oil) for 18 years. Never had a spindle bearing go bad, although I did have to replace the idler bearings. As I recall, I used 90 wt gear oil in the spindle bearings. For high speed bearings like those spindles, oil is a much better lubricant.

Interesting I had not read that will have to check the manual. How do you rig a gun to use oil? Just fill it ? This mower is many years old, the man who had it had to get a lower tractor as at 97 he had a hard timn getting on the A. I hape I can mow at 97. By the way he also did not have a battery in he hand cranked, I had to clean the mud dabbers out of the starter when I got it.

I think you can buy a gun made to use with oil and zerk fittings. however, I just used a regular gun with a flex hose on it and filled it with a little oil each time. If you leave oil in a regular grease gun, it will spill out the opening for the rod with the piston that pushes the grease down.
