About 3 Years ago I saw what the man said was a BN but the left side was narrow like an A with narrow front, don't remember how far the fender was from seat on left. So was it an A with narrow front or were some B's made this way.

A BN will have the axle housing be the same length on each side, four inches shorter than the B- lots of good answers on YT today.

However...some BNs have had the left axle and housing removed and the A parts substituted. Why? Because BN implements are rare, and with the narrow left, A implements can be used, or at least hacked into place. I've seen a BN with this conversion- the owner still had the correct left housing.

Best way to tell- serial number.

After I posted this morning I got out Randy Leffingwell's book in it he says that the BN rear wheel tread can go from 56 to 84" and the B can go from 64 to 96" that goes with what all you guy's said and that makes sence. But the tractor I saw was like the A with the long axel on right and the left side had no housing and wheel next to transmission housing. So was it a B with the left housing removed or an A with narrow front but under it. The guy was asking big money because it was BN. Sounds to me like the SHTA we all have heard of on here. Not going to buy, this is just something to talk about. Thank alot I am straight on the B & BN now.

I know the A's had wide fronts The confusion is in the BN's I thought the BN was 4" narrower on both left and right side than a B the tractor I am talking about was just like the A except had narrow front. Can't find my parts book right now but I know it has 3 drawbars 1 for each tractor I think it has 3 housings for left side. so just what is the BN like. You might think an old IH man would know this but back then there were 2 B's and 1 A where I worked and I only worked 1 of the B's. I will bost part numbers when I find book. Thanks

Ace, the rear differential shafts and housings on a B are each 4" longer than the same parts on a BN. It makes the rear wheel track 8" wider on a B than on a BN. This means that B's & BN's have different drawbars, foot plates & pedal guards, and the right hand seat bracket is mounted to the top of the differential shaft housing on a B where a BN has the seat bracket mounted on the fender mounting like an A does. You can spot a B because it will have 4" between the right side of the seat and the fender. A BN seat will be tight against the fender.
Engine, transmission, final drives & front ends are the same on both. Both could be bought with single or dual front wheels.
A BN differential shaft & housing are the same length as an A, but are different part numbers and are physically different in that the BN has a boss cast into it for cultivator attachment and the A does not.
Hope that helps.

Ace, here are a couple of pictures of a B seat mounting compared to a BN.

All the B's from the factory were narrow front end.
All the A's from the factory were wide front ends.

That's a BN. The BN uses a right axle housing that's the same length as an A, the B uses an axle housing that's 4 inches longer than an A.
