Went and bought a 300 utility today that has a heavy duty John Deere loader on it. It hasn't ran for about 10 years, but when it did run, the guy said that it didn't have much power, he said it may need overhauled. For something that has sit this long, what would your guys opinions be on what to do with it. It needs new tires on it, and the torque needs to be re-connected. It was near a mobile home fire and was burn't a little, but nothing serious enough to do extreme damage. What size of pistons would fit in it? Should I convert it to 12 volt? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Sounds like a real project!

Is the engine stuck or will it turn over? If the T/A is unhooked it's probably not working. With tires it sounds like at least a $2000 project to me just in parts.

I haven't had to rebuild my 300U engine yet but from what I've seen in catalogs you will have to replace the conrods too to fit available piston sets unless there is some kind of bushing available.

If the engine will turn over I would start by getting it running, clean the carb/fuel system, new points and condenser, wires and plugs. If it is running that will let you tell before you start rebuilding if the clutch and tranny are good, if the T/A is good, if the hydralics work and on and on...

That way with a small output of $ you can get a better idea of what work you are going to have to do and if the effort will be worth the time and $. You may decide that you have a great parts tractor...

The engine turns over good, and the clutch seems to work pretty good for how long it has sent. The carb's choke is a little frozen up. It needs all new gauges. Would it be better to put an alternator on it or convert the generator and rebuild it? The alternator would be alot less hassel and cheaper I think.

I have an alternator on mine, 12V, some would have you keep it 6V. 12V is just handier for me, you will have to switch it from positive ground to negtive ground if you do change. This is mostly changing the battery cables and switching the wires on the amp meter. If you are not conserned about keeping it original standard automotive gauges will fit, I have some in mine as it is a work tractor not a show model!

My Case/IH dealer showed the pipe was still available. There are two types to choose from, a short and a long. I think the price was around $50-60, so I went to a local muffler shop and had 'em bend me one, flange the end, and weld a muffler on it, then weld a little downturned tip on the outlet of the muffler. Not a great fit, but it does the job, and I only paid $50 for the whole works including muffler. I took the old beat up pipe for the fellow to use as a pattern.

I'll depart just a little from topic here to suggest that if you are going to use automotive gauges (I do on my 300U) and you're gonna replace the ammeter, replace it with a voltmeter. Think about it, if an ammeter stops working, you can't really tell, but if the voltmeter isn't working, you'll know at a glance. Besides, it's easier to route and hook up a little 18 gauge voltmeter wire than a big 10 or 12 gauge ammeter wire.

I will have to stop in at my local NAPA and get one. Working on getting the loader off right now so I can begin trying to get it running. Not to worried about originalness. Just need a work horse around the farm.
