A boneyard is the cheapest source for a replacement steering worm and gear. The risk of course is the replacement gear set will be no better than the one you've got now. Your CIH dealer can supply new parts, but they're gonna be costly - probably $200 - $250 range - maybe more.

If you are lucky the pivot shaft worm gear will be a full gear - with teeth all the way around. By removing the gear, turning it 180 deg and putting it back on the shaft, you'll bring fresh, unworn teeth into contact with the worm. However most of the H's I've looked messed with have had a half moon-shaped gear. This half moon gear has just enough teeth to rotate the pivot shaft between it's left and right stops. The gear cannot be turned to bring fresh teeth into contact with the worm.

Suggestion: Before you buy some expensive gears, check carefully both the upper end of the pivot shaft, also the worm shaft for looseness or play. Often replacing the bushing at the top of the pivot shaft and tightening or replacing the bearing/bushing that supports the worm shaft will bring the worm and gear back into proper engagement and will eliminate steering slop. I did this to my Super H a couple years ago - it completely solved a front wheel wobbling problem. And the parts (two bushings and a seal) cost less than $30.

Good luck!

Bob,
I looked at my M and the problem I have is worn bushings or bearings below the worm gear.
Any ideas on where to get a parts diagram or something to aid me in identifing the busings and how to replace them?
Thanks
Richard

Richard – If you post your email I'll send you a copy of the parts catalog page with an exploded view of the bolster assembly – also the part numbers for the bushings/seal. Note the catalog I have is for the Super M. But far as I know believe a straight M is identical.

IH still has the parts however the worm shaft is probably $200. I'd try a salvage yard. If you find a gear you can turn the worn part to the side that isn't used and drop it back on the spleen. If your worm has wear in one spot you can turn the wheels to one side as you screw the worm back onto the gear. After everything is coupled up and you straighten the wheels to straight ahead the gear will be on a new unworn place on the worm. The worn place on the worm and the gear will not be noticible when you are turning the wheels.

The worm shaft is $306, and the worm gear is $170
