I know that the oil level should be up to the top petcock. Over time some leaks out, loose some from checking ,etc. then none comes out of the top petcock. I was wondering what you guys do, either top it off so it comes out of the top petcock when opened or check it on the lower one then add when it doesn't come out of the bottom petcock? Thanks.

John: I always fill mine to top petcock and never add oil until drops below lower petcock. At that time I add a quart. If I happen to overfill, I drain it off. Any engine with crankcase overfull should never be operated that way. It is very hard on crank seals, probably the single biggest reason for crank seal failure.

One other item to watch with these is dust pluging petcocks. If I at first don't get oil when I open a petcock I will pick at outlet with small wire. Turn it in and out couple of times. My Super A once got filled 3 quarts overfull by a guy that borrowed it. I was away and he told my wife the tractor was awfully hard on oil, he had to add 3 quarts. I went out to tractor and drained 2.5 quarts off the top petcock.

we always make sure we at least get drips from the top petcock. depends how much oil you burn.
always make sure you got a good steady pace out of the bottom.

john, checked my 1949 operators manual and it stated: Drain oil down to lower test cock and add oil till it comes out top cock, use common sense and dont forget to watch your oil prssure gage. have fun JRB

The petcocks can be thought of as the "full and add" marks on a dipstick. It has to be above the lower one. However, I pay no attention to the lower and add until it comes out the upper. If it is barely above the lower, and your tractor uses oil, it could easily drop below the lower one without you knowing. The original purpose of the petcocks was to drain impurities from tractors run on kerosene/distillate. You drained (daily) to the level of the lower one and added oil to the level of the upper.

I think IH's purpose of the dual petcocks was to make sure you had enough oil, but NOT TOO MUCH. The upper petcock should drain no oil, while the lower should always drain some. That way, you know the level is between the two. If the upper still drains, you cannot know how high the level is above there, especially if you might have a water leak into the oil pan. If you keep the fluid level below the upper petcock, and then, mysteriously, it begins to drain from it, you probably have a fluid(water)leak somewhere you need to check on. My two cents.
