Will an A do the job?

Little help for the new guy? Just bought thirteen acres of pasture that's been ignored and overgrowing for five years. I'm shopping the papers for an inexpensive tractor and keep seeing ads for Farmall A's with bush hogs. Is this enough tractor to run a bush hog, do some mowing and generally drag stuff around?

Ted : If you run a brush hog , dont forget to put an overrunning clutch on the PTO. I run a 4 foot one with my Super A and it works fine .

It won't handle an overgrown pasture very well. If you manage to get it mowed once, you will realize that it needs to be cut when it is short. I agree that you need the hydraulics on a Super A. You will be better off with an H. It might even cost less.

Ted: I had an uncle who farmed 100 acres in 1950s, milked 20 cows and did all his work with a Super A. And yes you should go for a Super A and get factory hydraulics.

I have three of these tractors; Super A, 130 and 140. I have pulled 7,000 lbs on a flat bottom stone boat. I have somewhere a picture of Farmall 130 when it was almost new coming out of bush in winter on frozen, snow covered ground, pulling a set of bobsleds with 2 cords of pulpwood on sleds. Pulpwood weighs about 4,200 lbs per cord. That was the largest load hauled out of bush that winter sometime after the trail was tracked and frozen. The 130 did however remove a 158 cords from bush that winter in 113 loads. My dad pulled a 140 bushel manure spreader with the 130 for 5 years. And yes I have also run the haybaler, a New Holland Super 69 Hayliner with thrower and pulling wagon, a 20 footer. I baled two loads one day when my 656, 560 and 300 were busy with haylage. Had some product that was too dry for haylage.

With a front mounted snowblade they will push snow with much larger tractors. Truly an amazing little tractor, capable of much more than they were designed for, and the ones that received good maintainence are still around, and probably will be in another 50 years. Economical too.

Hugh: Are the hydraulics the only real difference between the A and the Super A? and if so, can I retrofit an A with the hydraulics?

Ted: Very difficult to retrofit an A with factory hydraulics. The hydraulics are live off the timimg gears of the engine. The pump mounts just under the distributor or mag. The block on the A was never drilled for this. The hydraulic touch control uint mounts just under the fuel tank on top of torque tube. The A torque tube is round on top where as the Super A has a flat top on torque tube for mounting the hydraulic unit. The block and torque tube would need to be changed. Probably cheaper to buy the Super A tractor.

The other difference is all of the A had Mag ignition from factory, although many have been changed over the years. Very few Super A ever had mag ign, the ones that did were ordered that way.

Another item you might also wish to consider is the fact the A and Super A had C-113 engine with thermosyphon cooling. The Super A1, 100, 130 and 140 all had C-123 engine, all had water pump cooling, hydraulics were beefed up a bit and they had much better brakes. The brakes had a better mechanical advantage giving more positive breaking and the design made them less expensive to buy brake parts for. If you wish send me an e mail and I can send you a few pictures on tractors, hitches, etc. I have had one of these tractors for 45 years.

ih bug: The only information I have is the hydraulics were beefed up to give more lift. I under stand that on the offsets it was from Super A1 onward and on the larger tractors from the Super C onward. It would seem as though it would be pump in conjunction with change to C-123 engine as well as to fast hitch. I must admit I can't see a whole lot of difference between my Super A, 130 and 140, but then they are now 40-50 years old. I've gone down hill also, then I'm 60.

there is a picture of an (a) in the farmall photo area, The guy said he was bailing hay and his (m) broke down, It is a picture of an (a) running a hay bailer and pulling the wagon behind the bailer with 100 bail on it ! I am still amazed at that photo.

Jon I am 61 my dad bought a Super A at a farm sale in the early 1950's I don't know exact year or exact year of the Super A he used it until 1969 when he bought a 230. He got a 2 disc plow and a 7 ft. mower with it. Dad and my Uncle farmed togather in this period we used the A and an H to farm about 500 acres 60 to 70 head of dairy cows and 30 to 35 head of reg. Duroc sows We pulled drill, hay rake , hay wagons 100, 60lb bales pulled a 50T IHC baler have pulled 7ft. MH clipper combine in small seed in very heavy combining put Super A on combine and pull the whole thing with the H Have pulled silage wagons thru a trench silo, but Dad usually used it to pack the silage the 7ft. mower was worn completly out. We fed hay in the winter with it Yes a couple of friends and I did lots of joy riding on it, Dad turned it over onced. The man Dad sold it to did not use it much But when He died another Dairy Farmer bought it and used it to rake hay I think the rear end has gone bad now. As Hugh they were and still are amazing little tractors.
