I see several posts recent about paintng difficulties. I have encountered a few myself but since I'm a novice I expected it. I had an "experienced" friend help but he paints automotive projects. He started out by thinning the 2150 to about 2:1 even though the can said 8:1. Don't know if this contributed to some of my problems. The main tractor went fairly well although I found that my extensive hot pressure washing to prep failed to find all the grease or remove all the dirt. Also I'm painting in my machine shed which may contribute to the dirt/dust problems. The main problems were encountered with the sheet metal- couldn't get all the dust off and it shows more on sheet metal. I also had problems with the finish looking shiney in places and flat in others. Where flat it looks a little grainy. I'm using a hvlp gun but my friend wanted it set at 50 lbs. which is the top end of the recommended pressure. I had a little orange peal on one piece and on two side panels I got small areas of what looked like hair fractures but were little ridges. I've resanded them. I'm going to hit the sheet metal again and would appreciate comments on the thinning, gun pressure, etc. I wasn't looking for a show tractor job but want it nice as possible given my experience level. Thanks in advance.

Iowa Will,
I am also an amateur at painting. Two weeks ago, I painted my C with 2150, 8:1. The day was too hot and too humid and I used too much air pressure. Tractor painted ok but sheet metal was shiny in some spots and flat in others. Yesterday we had low humidity, light breeze. I set air compressor at about 55lbs, regulator/water filter about 40lbs. Took my time and re-sprayed the parts till they look wet, but not dripping. Now it all looks nice and shiny. Patience and practice, practice. Good luck and have fun.

wait till your "helpful" friend is not around. wet sand everything, Yes, that is way too much thinner. I use aout 10% thinner. Ditch the HVLP gun, they don't have enough overspray to reach into all the little nooks and crannies. wet the floor if you need to keep down the dust or move outside where you can see. I do all my painting outside and like to spray in the morning before the wind comes up. (hopefully is is tack dry before the dust starts blowing) Painting at evening is an option but I have trouble with insects landing in the paint. When you get all done and have a nice glossy job you can thank your friend and never have to tell him what you did.

HERE, TRY THIS is right on tract.

The other thing to do is use a fine varnish brush to paint the castings. I know some people will blast me for using a brush but I have had some really good results. The sheet metal will look best sprayed.
