I recently acquired a PD-40 power unit. The starting carb is the brass type like on the Regular where the air flows through it in a spiral. I bought the ops manual for it, and it tells how to set the idle speed, but makes no mention of mixture screws. There is a knurled knob on the top that looks like it should be the high speed adjustment that was out about two turns. Then there is another screw in the bottom that maybe could be idle mixture. Any idea what these should be set at? Also, this unit is missing its air filter and intake pipe. I will post an ad in the classifieds, but before I do, are there any salvage yards that have anything in the way of 40 series parts? I know they are pretty rare. None of the yards I usually buy from have anything. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks guys.... Brian

the only setting on those carbs is the idle speed as that is the only speed it will run. just set that idle screw so it runs about 700 to 800 rpm on gas. Also there is no air filter or intake pipe on those carbs if that is the air filter you are talking about. There is just a shutter that you close when it switches to diesel to keep the dirt out. When it switches to diesel it draws air through the air filter but just sucks the open air on gas unless you have a later one with the other carb on it.

Yes, I should have clarified. It's the main air filter for the diesel side that's missing, along with the air intake pipe to the manifold. I'm assuming that the air filters for all of the 40 series (gas, kero and diesel) are all the same, aren't they? Also, what does the knurled knob on top of the carb do, if anything? I turned it in till it seated and it was about 2 turns, so I returned it to that setting.

I think all the air cleaners are the same but not sure. The knurled knob on the carb I can't help you with either. Mine have hex instead of knurled and have never touched them as far as adjustment goes. The servicemans manuel I have for those diesels does not even identify that piece seperately or say anything as far as adjustment of it. Sorry I'm not much help, maybe someone else will know yet.
