I have a Farmall M with the serial# FBK..... ..159970..... ...x1. This machine has a torque amplifier on it but everyone I ask says that did not come on model M. That only was on Super M's or MTA's and such. With the serial #, I believe this is a 1948 model. Any help would be greatful.

If some one made 1 out of 2 from the engine back would have to be SMTA and change serial number plate from the M to the SMTA housing cause TA housing will not fit up to M rear end.

The TA was not avalible until 1954,and those models were called Super M-TA.They were only made that year and then the went to the 400 tractors. Also all Super M-TA's with torque attachment will have have an S after the serial number. They did make a few Super M-TA's without the torque.

Are you sure it's a Torque Amplifier? There were a very few tractors IH built with experimental transmissions, I know of one left. Probably not one with your serial number.

What you probably have is parts of an M and a Super MTA mated in later years. Somebody had two parts tractors and made one. The casting date codes would tell the story there. For that matter, the part number off the clutch housing would too.

The earliest experimental drawings for TA that I've seen were 1949, although IH was obviously playing with planetarys earlier. Your serial number indicates a standard production tractor, or at least not something too radical, so I think you're looking at a farmer spare parts tractor. Still be a conversation piece.
