I just purchased a Farmall M. The serial number plate that is usually on the clutch housing is not there. The motor has a indented stamp of 6983. I don't have it running yet so I can not check the hydraulic pressure. I believe the older tractors had about 450 PSI pressure. Is there a way to date this tractor without the serial number?

First of all my wife is jealous but at least she knows where I am 24 hours a day!

OK here are the numbers:
Engine Serial # 6943-DJ Casting # 6/8-Z
Pulley Casting # 6-10-J
Front Spindle 3-19-45 (the 45 is a number, not a letter.
Axle rear Casting # 6-13-J
Operator Platform or transmission top Casting # 6-26-J

Does this mean that the back half of the tractor is a 1940, the engine a 1954 and the steering a 1945?

But the number you have a serial number for engine is a part number. The engine serial number is on a flat spot just below the #1 spark plug.

I think you've been at this tractor thing way too long David and are taking it far too seriously. You should back off for awhile and try dating girls instead.

Never seen the serial number stamped on the front spindle, and the one on the block MAY or MAY NOT match the tractor.Best to go by casting codes FIRST!Then if the codes are pretty close you can say its probably the original engine, then use the serial number off of it.

There should be a small flat area on the engine block, in the area of where the generator mounts. The number that is stamped there should be the same as the serial number. You can also use casting codes, these codes are on just about every piece of the tractor that is made of castiron, and consist of three digits, which will appear as 2*15*J, which will decode to February 15, 1940. The codes begin with the letter I, for 1939, J for 1940, and so on. The letters U, and V, are not used, so a T is 1950, and a W is 1951.

A slight correction, V was not used, but U & W were both used for 1951, They started over with A in 1955

I know this love of red is great but not sure I'd want to really date one. Could lead to a serious relationship and cost you lots of money in the end. Instead of flowers and candy you'll buy paint and tires. Soon it will be a new muffler then later brake shoes. With desires running strong it is hard to resist but if ou continue this dating relationship it will lead you directly to the poor house, take the word of one who has passed down that road before.
