I recently bought a 1977 IH-364. It ran fine for about 10 hours. That's when I noticed the RPMs surging. A few minutes later, the engine stopped and will not restart. I've changed the fuel filter and purged the air from the system, but it still won't start. It appears that fuel is getting from the tank to the to each of the outlets on the injector pump. Is there something I'm missing ?

I'm thankful for any help.

I have a 1978 model 364. Has been a good tractor except for the lift. The lift still works but when you pick up something the lift eases back down and causes it to jump. The heavier the object the worse it jumps. I have had it worked on several times. It will work fine for a while then starts jumping again. Have found very few people who will even attempt to work on it. This is the only thing wrong with the tractor. If anyone can help me with this i would appreciate it.

You say that fuel is emerging from the fuel lines, is it pure fuel or is there still air bubbles in it? If its fizzing like coke there is still some air in the system. If you think you have got all the air out, tighten all the fuel lines up again and get someone to crank the engine.While it is turning over, squirt A LITTLE starting fluid into the air intake, that often does the trick.

Bill, with a good hot battery, loosen one or all of the injector "line NUTS" at the pump or the injectors. Crank the engine over and you should get a good leak. If not you have a defective pump if you know you are getting fuel to the pump. I am sure you have checked for restricted air intake. If you have fuel pressure from the injector lines, as described above, I would check injector pump timing.--- Good-Luck---

Thanks for the information. I'll give that a try.

I did check the air intake, and it seems ok.

As far as checking the injector pump timing, is that something that is fairly straightforward or would I be better off taking it to the nearest IH dealer.

Checking timing is fairly involved but you can do it if you are mechanically inclined and have a service manual. I have a 364 like yours and I got my service manual and operators manual from a Case-IH dealer. Very good manuals and a better price. I would make absolutly sure you are getting fuel from the pump even if you have to disconnect the inlet line from the pump. Like someone stated earlier, try a little starting fluid, but don't over do it. You might even consider pulling the tractor to start it. Just be CAREFUL.

actually, that did occur when I first got the tractor. Ive since learned my lesson. I did notice that the fuel shut off controls a "lever" on the fuel injector pump. Is it possible that something has broken inside the pump? And if that were the case, would I still see fuel comming out at the injector outlets on the pump? I have not removed the pump yet.
