i would like to know which is better. the band or the disc. asumeing that both are on a tractor and new. both are well taken care of. which one is better? i would say that the bands are better just from my expeirence. but i want persons opinion on this matter, say if i had an M with band brakes would it be better to go to disc?

I would never trade a band brake setup for a disc brake one. I've seen a super H get hot enough to peel the paint off the brake housing with very little load behind it. And it was adjusted properly. As with anything proper maintenance is the key to a properly working tractor. One thing that certainly didn't help the early disc brake setups was the lack of oil cooling. Stick with the band, their easier to fix and they work better.

Now don't scream at me for saying this, but my old 450 has disc brakes on it and my buddy's J.D. 60 has the old JD brakes and I'll pick the 60 any day to take the hay down off the hill!!! I rebuilt the brakes on the 450 right after I got it and they didn't work any better than before.
I don't have much problem with my "new" 656 though ;-)

Steve, the only reason the green ones have better brakes is because you can darn near stand on the pedals ;-P

Seemed to me that the band brakes were easier to keep working, but the discs are okay if kept clean and taken care of.We used the 350 on the baler, and when we had to stop, I would lock the left brak of course, but sometimes forgot to release it when we started out again. Didn't notice with tractor in low gear, but dad sure did when I had to stop again and pushed the clutch in. almost threw him off front of wagon. Kind of turned brake housing black after a while too. Band brakes seemed to lock better, and were more consistent in braking. Discs semed to either not work well, or lock up too easy.

You know what I am going to tell you..... ...They wouldn't have made conversions to change over the band brakes to disc's on the old M's. And people wouldn't have made the change if the bands worked well for them. I have seen alot of M's running around with disc's on them.

Steven: I would definately never change one, either way. I have seen both work well and also both work damn poorly.

That is the whole truth Hugh, I have an H that has the band brakes of course, and they work perfectly. The disc brakes on our 460 never did work as good as the H has, the disc brakes always seemed very touchy.

Band brakes are ok on a IH H or smaller But on higer HP tractors disc brakes work better, what would you want on your truck drum or disc brakes. Keep them adjusted and clean the disc will last longer and work better.
