Trailering a Super M

I have seen pictures of tractors on trailers in this site and was wondering how they loaded them when you have a row crop front end. The ramps on the trailers are on the outside edges but there are no ramps in the middle to drive up on. This may be obvious to most of you, but I have never seen a tractor loaded on a trailer. I'm planning on getting setup to trailer my super m and need all the info I can get before spending the dollars.

I just bought my 1st antique tractor, a Farmall MD. My gooseneck has only 2 springloaded foldover ramps and no center ramp. I had cut 4 4x4s to go across trailer and act as choks in front of and behind front and rear wheels when chaining down. I spread these out to act as 3rd ramp and they worked great. I am planning on two cross pieces to bolt to them so they all act as one big ramp and can't separate where your front wheel could fall through.

I've run my narrow front M and Super C up on just two ramps ever since I bought my trailer five years ago. I approach the ramps at an angle, run the front wheels up onto the trailer and then by the time the fronts are up on the trailer the rears are lined up to run right up. Sounds dangerous, but it works very well. Backing off the trailer is just the opposite. When the rears are near the bottom of ramps, start cutting your front toward either ramp and bring it on down. Piece of cake!

I'm with Jeff I loaded alot of tractors with just 2 ramps the same way. Works well and you dont have to fool around with a extra ramp all the time.

If you have'nt got a trailer yet, look for a tilt bed trailer. I have a 16' with a 2' dove tail. ( a small ramp that goes all the way across the width of the trailer ) The whole bed tilts up with a hydraulic jack. You don't need ramps and if you can back up to a small hill you don't even have to raise the bed. A 10,000 gvw trailer should work good with a super M.

If that's the case people ought to stay away from farm machinery period!!! There's nothing wrong with tilt-bed trailers. Like anything else you have to use common sense and be safe. I've had mine for six years and hauled an H and an M, bobcats and mini trac-hoes just fine. Any trailer is unsafe if you over load it or load it wrong. You have to be smarter than the equipment you're using.

I have gotten by by using a car ramp for the middle. Usually too short, helps if you can find a depressionsome where to lower the rear of the trailer. Best thing is to make a 3rd ramp that fits, if you are going to do it repeatedly. Temporary fix is dangerous if you have not driven the tractor before.

Best solution if you don't have a trailer yet is to get one with a third ramp in the middle. That is what I have. Most trailer dealers can get that for you. You can add one as well if the trailer does not have one. I have seen folks load a tricycle on a trailer with two ramps by jockeying around. Usually was a smaller tractor and a low trailer. Don't think I would want to try that with a Super M which normally will require a higher over the wheels trailer.

Let me add to what Bob said.If your trailer is a little high and/or your ramps a little long,moving them in and out wont work,I know!I tried it with my M and it just wouldnt work,not enough room to slide the ramp in without hitting the front tires,so I bulit a third ramp to take on and off as I need it.(Thats my trailer,others may work out perfect)Another alternative,which is what I plan to do,get a trailer with a gate on the back.My buddy has one that is very solid and is spring loaded so it will go up and down real easy.But regardless,BE CAREFUL!I prefer to back my on so if my foot accidentally slips off the clutch,theres less of a chance itll flip over on top of my.

Those with two removable ramps sometimes just set one in the middle of the trailer and drive the tractors front wheels up onto the rear end of the trailer. Then, get off and set the ramp out in line with the back tire and finish loading the tractor.

Others approach the rear of the trailer at an angle and drive the front wheels up on one ramp and then swing the tractor to line up the rear tires to the ramps.

Yet, others have a third ramp to use for the front wheels.(Tricycle front end).

No matter which method you use, safety should always prevail. Blocking the rear end of the trailer up is very important as well as, blocking the trailer wheels. I never count on the emergency brake and or "Park" setting of the gear shifter of the tow vehicle. You can not be too careful!
