Hugh will the head off a 340 C135 interchange with a Farmall 100 C123?

Red: I can see that some of the C-123 engines had 9 stud heads while others had 14 stud heads. All C-135 had 14 stud heads. The IT manual at least just at a glance doesn't tell where those 9 stud heads were used. I suspect the change came with the fan hub water pump, used on 140 and 240 tractors. I do know this the heads on 130 and 140 are quite different. If you do a bit of checking I think you will find 100, 200, 130 and 230 all had 9 stud head and from there on in 140 and 240 all had 14 stud head same as the C-135 in 404 and 2404. Whether it is same part number the IT manual doesn't say.

Just checked my Farmall 200, 230, and 240 Parts Manual. It shows two different gasoline heads, one for C-123 engines serial number 501-36000, and the other is for C-123 engines serial number 36001 and up. Famall 200 had engines with serial number 501-36000, Farmall 230 had engines with serial number 36001-65000, and 240 had 65001 and up. Both heads shown in my manual use nine studs, but the studs for the 200 head have a different part number than the studs for the 230 and 240 head. Both heads use the same head gasket. This leads me to belive that the change to 14 studs for the C-123 occured during the 1963-1979 production of the 140. I suppose the easy way to figure it all out is to look into what head gaskets are used on different tractors with C-123 and C-135 engines.

KB: The engine number on my 1958 130 is 56651, the tractor serial number is 9313 J . The serial number on my 1963 140 is 22157 J and engine number is 102230. 130 has 9 stud head and 140 has 14 stud head. This coinsides with your findings.

Hugh, I have a C135 our of a 340. I don't know what the year is but the engine serial # is 30933 and the block part # is 367727R2. I can't find any number on the head but it is a 9 stub head. Being as my C123 is also a 9 stub head I think it will swap. Next question, my 100 with a C123 is rated at 20hp and a 240 with a C123 is 30hp. What is different in the two tractor engine to have a 10 hp difference?

Red: First one that hits right quick is rpm's 1575 on 140 and 2200 0n the 240. By gosh, in the IT manual rpm is only difference, carburation and ignition are the same.

Hugh, how about the head and cam are they also the same. I don't have an IT manuel just the IH manuels for the 100.

Red: I am going through the section called condenced service data. I will quote you differences where there are differences. Bore C-123, 3-1/8 and C-135, 3-1/4. Stroke C-123, 4" and C-135, 4-1/16 Compression ratio C-123, in 100,200,130 and 230 - 6.5-1, C-123 in 140 and 240 is 6.8-1 and C-135 in 404 and 2404 is 7.4-1. Valves intake are all .014, exhaust .014 on all but C-135 in 404 and 2404 where exhaust setting is .020 I do see some differences in carburator, and I suspect this is more age than size of engine. It shows C-123 engines as having Carter Carb with 17/64 float setting or Zenith Carb with 1-5/32 float setting It shows the C-135 engine with Marvel Schebler with float setting of 1/4.
