I changed the rear gear housing on my M as it had been repaired at some stage of its life and still had many cracks through it.

I measured the backlash on the crownwheel as 55 thou. When I assembled the gears in the new casing although the book says 12 thou. is the correct figure, I put it back with approx 35 thou backlash. I also cut the last 3 shims that I put back in both sides to enable easy acess to do quick adjustments if necessary.

Although the gearset in the old casing ran nice and quiet, they now sound like a fire siren, and scatter the livestock for miles around. I've moved some of the shims across to open up the backlash to no avail. I've been told that to set up the crownwheel and pinion as per the book would be a waist of time as they need to run in exactly their old position.

Anybody have the answer?

What lube are you using? Get some 140 weight gear lube if possible (unless using in winter, up North) or the heaviest weight available.
Hy-Tran is a good lube but not enough "cushion" for noise reduction. The newer machines designed for Hy-Tran were made to tighter tolerances.

Moving the shims to give more backlash is not going to help. If at all it will get worse. Why not try what the book says (.012")and see what you get. My 2 cents, Mike

Thanks Mike,
I had a friend that did exactly that (.012") and his M sounded like an air raid siren. He eventially increased the backlash to 1/8th" which I think is way too much till he got it quieter.
The info I keep getting is that if you had a quiet setup before and you want it again, and if you use the same gears you should have them running in the same place (ie.same backlash) in my case .055".

Ive also heard that this is a particularly tricky one, common to Farmalls. Someone must have done a few of these and know the tricks! Still wouldn't swap it for another colour machine!!!!

Mike, you're right about one thing and that is the color. The Green ones in particular run so noisy, and vibrate so much that you wouldnt know if it had a problem or not in the first place. I wish I could shed some light on your main problem and that is how to shut the siren off, but that is a little out of my realm of expertise, at least until I have to conquer the same problem myself. Good Luck, and if you cant keep em running perfect, at least keep em RED.....
