I have a farmall 460 diesel with a fast hitch. I am wondering if there is anything i could do to make it safe for tractor pulling. I have also herd that I should put a H hitch on it. Any help is appreciated.

Jason, All of my tractor have the fast hitch and I pull them all. I Built a bracket that bolts to the 6 holes on top of both axles and brackets on my fast hitch arms. between these brackets I have top link turn buckels that are fully adjustable. I use this system on my 400 Farmall Diesel and 300 Farmall. The turn buckles are easyly removed for farm use.

Jason: There is absolutely noting unsafe in regards to pulling with a fast hitch. The only reason I can see that officials don't you pulling with your fast hitch is your can use your draft control and hydraulics to gain an advantage over other tractors. I my opinion your problem is all about the whimps without that advantage. I say if your tractor was designed with that advantage, then it must be a better tractor, for pulling at least.

On the east coast of Canada we used to haul logs on sled type devices we called scoots. They had runners turned up on both ends. with the use of slip links you could put the pull chains on either end. When those big Farmalls with fast hitch came out in the 50s it sure put those 6 cylinder Oliver and Cockshutt guys in there place. These sleds were used on bare ground. Lot like a tractor pull, except you had to start the full load. Now that will sort out the good operators. Back in those days we even had tractor pulls like that, whatever tractor could start the highest percentage of it's own weight, and move it 8 feet.

Pull with the swinging drawbar, that is what the hitch was made to do.

I don't think a 460 had a swinging drawbar, all you could get was either the fasthitch, or the standard drawbar.

You could get a swinging drawbar for both the fast hitch and the standard drawbar both on the 460 and 560. The standard drawbar set up is almost identical to the M, SM, etc. The swinging drawbar for the fast hitch hooked at front point of hitch went back to and beyond the fast hitch cross bar. I have in the past owned both and they were both IH made.

Hugh, guess my fingers got to going faster than my brain, and that's bad because i type slow.
Of course there would have been a swinging drawbar available with the standard hitch, just like an M or super M, but I have never seen one with a fasthitch, until the 806, 856. Always thought there should have been.
I learned something, thank you.

rusty: If you look under the fast hitch of a 460 or 560, where the two hitch beams come together at front of hitch. You will see a triangle gusset with about 1-1/8 inch hole The swinging drawbar pinned to that and was a pressed type chanel with a bow in it for fitting under rear end when hitch was all the way up. At the back it had a 3/4 clip to hold it down on cross bar. Those who liked them swore by them, those who didn't swore at them. The triangle shape plate that bolted to cross bar would pull as much. I was one of the latter.

I have a 350 utility with a fast hitch. The pulling rules make us hook the hitch solid. You pull the pins out of the lift arms and move them to the fixed pins that are closer to the rear end of the tractor. I then use longer bolts with spacers to raise the center plate on the drawbar to 20".

Ron: Just precicely what I was saying, the poor whimpy competitors can't let you use a design advantage built into your tractor. That is presicely why I don't go to tractor pulls. I remember back in 1976 when the first modern day tractor pull came to my area. The organizers came to see most farmers about support. At the time I had 560, 656 and 1066. They started quoting a whole bunch of rules on change I would need to make to my tractors before entering. I said that my tractors go as they are or they stay home. And so should everyone else.

I surely hope you guys make the guys with diff locks so they are not usable. If they want to have a pure farm tractor pull. Then they should have a list of 10 implemnts. If your tractor is not such that it could hook up to and feasably work 8 out of 10 your out. You set your drawbar anywhere you want, but as soon as your front wheels leave the ground your disqualified. I want to be clear on this I am talking about stock pulls only.
