I have determined that I need to get a new steering (pitman) arm to go on my 300U. It has 2 different lenght arms and it steers horribly. Does anybody know: 1) where to find one, 2) if another model tractor arm is the same, 3) if i can cut and weld the one I have and it would be strong enough?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about the rods that go from the front wheels back to the steering box? Mine are two different lengths too. I think they are suppose to be. I took mine and had the ends cut off where the tierod ends go in and had them welded to bigger and heavier tube.

I actually mean the levers that come out of the steering gear box. There is a 9" O.C. arm on the right side and a 6 1/2" O.C. arm on the left side. It turns great to the right, but not so well to the left.

Thanks,
Ben

They both should be the same length. IH changed the steering and made these arm pieces longer about half way through production of the 300U. You have one of the older pieces and one of the newer - but the two weren't supposed to be mixed.

If I have the choice, should I go long or short? Did anything else change at the same time that would cause the short or long to be better?

Looking at the parts manual, they changed a number of other things in the steering at the same time - however, the only one that really should affect you much is the steering knuckle arms (at the other end of the tie-rods). The older version has about 5-inch centers on these knuckle arms, the newer ones should be longer (I think). The newer version is supposed to make the steering easier, but you've got to target what you can find parts for. The switch occurred at SN26458 and up, if that helps you. Good luck!
