I would say the most reliable tractor to buy would be a 966 without a cab, 2nd choice is 856, it depends on usage, maybe you want a cab, then 986, I would avoid anything with Turbocharged engine for day to day lighter work, the 1206 is a classic tractor but its almost 40 years old, shifting is difficult compared to later 26-56-66-86, also 966 only had D414 all series/years.

i WOULD GET A 1256 TURBO CHARGED DIESEL BUT MAKE SHURE IT HAS DULE TIRES BECAUSE THE POWER OF THE TRACTOR MAKES IT SPIN WITH OUT THE WEIGHT AND TRACTION OF A SECOND TIRE IN THE BACK.

RPM I beg your pardon but the 966 was not long till it came with the D436 ,Hydro 100, Hydro 186, 986 as well. Read what I posted about the 966 >information came from IH in service bulletin.

Ace, according to Engine parts catalog issued by Case-IH from 1997, D414 was used in all 966 ever built, I worked at a IH dealership from 1960, never seen a 966 with a factory D436. In fact I still do but this week its called CNH. Next week who knows.

The reason IH put the 436 in the 9's is because they had some trouble with the D414 braking sleves the 1066 with the DT414 didnot I never so this in the 9's I was around. Having said some one is going to say that all wet sleves have some trouble that is why they have filter on the coolent. The problem I am talking about had nothing to with the coolent.

The guys who say 986 has a D-436 are right. I think that most of the confusion about this comes from the fact that the 1086 with it's DT-414 engine has fewer cubic inches than the smaller 986! Of course, the 1086 has a turbo, so it has more horsepower. I have always found it strange that IH didn't just give the 1086 a DT-436. 986 is a very reliable tractor with all of the comforts, and has quite a few improvements over the old 06 series, but I bet you can buy the 1206 cheaper, and you'll be getting a simple, reliable workhorse. It's really up to you.

Condition is KING. I agree a 1206 is a good tractor, but a lot of them had the power turned up so they could pull the same equipment a 1456-66-86 pulled. The transmission is the weak point in the 1206 and after 35+ years any purchase of one needs to have an allowance for that possible repair unless your buying a known cream puff. That said, remember the 986 came out in some of the hardest economic times farming has ever seen and most where worked hard and put up wet for several years. A lot of these suffered from poor maintenace (can't afford an oil and coolant change if you aren't make the equipment payments).

What you say about the 86 series and to some degree is true of 66 series and the economic climate that followed. Most of the farmers that made the plunge into new equipment in the 06, 26 and 56 series days had them paid off before that hit. 66 series were kind of border line on this.

I also believe these 100 plus hp tractors that were worked are not going to be kicking around when they are 50 to 60 years old like the Farmall M did. It quite frankly surprises me to hear of so many 56, 66 and 86 series tractors under 10,000 hours. Where I hail from we were wacking the hours on at the rate of between 800 and 1000 hours per year. I would have thought 66 series tractors would all be in excess of 20,000 hours by now. I guess there must have been a lot of farmers well enough off they bought these to look at.

I am not sure about the 986 having 414 the first 966 had 414 but then went to 436 so I thought the 986 had the 436 may be some one can conferm this. The 1206 was a horse for sure.

aces, drop me an e-mail. I'd have to say the 1206 for brute power and the 986 for creature comfort.

Aces: You are right 986 has the 436 without a turbo. It was also used in Hydro's 100 and 186. My memory is rusty on this but I believe black stripe 966 also had the 436 na.

The 986 and 1206 would be a toss up though.
