Anybody got any tips for putting in those small screws that hold the condenser and points in an IH distributor? I changed mine last night in my 300U and the screw for the condensor is a real pain to put back. I'm hoping someone has some tricks to try.

Try some Bees Wax on the end of the screwdriver,it's sticky and won't gum up the works.

I've done it before, don't remember a major problem. Use a screwdriver of the proper size and length, and tape the screw to the screwdriver.

sounds like a problen I had a few weeks ago. got a point set cheap when Farm and Fleet was going under. WRONG The condenser was just enough biger that I had one sam hill of a time getting the screw started. I'll not pull that dumb *ss trick again. Otherwise it is usually no tric to stat the screw. Most of my screwdrivers a magnetized just enough from use that a small screw will stay in the slot. Oh and by the way, I Always take those distributers off and work on them on the bench. Just put a little scratch on the side which way the roter is pointing.

I've had luck using a magnetized screwdriver.

Charlie: I hear you and Wayne as well talking. My grand dad used to say it made your fingers all feel like thumbs. What I would like to find are screws with Robertson heads, but in that length and thread I don't think they are to be had.

The experts tell us our economy is market driven. Surely there must be enough gas, distributor tractors around to count a bit. The main problem with this market driven economy, it is all aimed at people who part with their money quite easily. I don't think owners of old tractors fit in that crowd.

I was pretty sure that I heard a number of years ago that Robertson screws and bolts are against the law in the US. Whoever manufactures Phillips screws lobied the US Gov't when Robertsons were invented and had them banned from the US.

So, my guess is that our American brethren are out of luck when it comes to converting to Robertsons. A dreadful shame if I am correct.

Sean: You mean 245,000,000 people are going through life without Robertson screws. I'm almost tempted to believe your joshing me. However I'm sure your not or these guys would have mentioned them. What a sheltherd life to lead, no Robertson screws. Would be almost as bad as no beer in hot weather.

Go to your automotive tool source and ask for a screw starting screwdriver. It has an inner part that twists and holds the screw slot while you insert the tiny thing that teaches you patience(maybe a few new words?).
These screw starters are available in slotted & phillips styles.

I have one of those, it came with a snap-on tool set. It is a lifesaver, wouldn't be without it.
