MD carb float same as M float?? and float linkage?

Is the float in a Farmall MD carb the same as an M carb?? Anyone know where I can get a carb kit? All the parts sites I've checked do not list MD carb kits although they have for other Farmall models. Also there appears to be a linkage that is connected to a bellcrank on the backside of the carb and to the "convert to diesel" leverage system that keeps the float on it's seat while converted to diesel running. Mine is missing. Any idea where I could get one?

If you are interested, I have an extra carb and probably the linkage. Also I've found that lawnmowwer floats are the same (can't remember which brand at the moment) maybe Teckumsa? Send me a note and I'll get back to you.

Geoff:
If the carb and linkage are in good shape I would be interested if the price is reasonable, especially if the carb has good internals (float, needle etc). How much are you asking??--Erik

Thanks guys. Yeah It's hard to get the back bolts of the carb off. Any comments on my missing linkage issue and is that what the linkage does (keep float closed)?? Thanks again--

The linkage behind the carb is tied into the diesel/gas switch over lever. In diesel mode it locks up the float to stop gas flow to the carb. There is a cross shaft that goes through the to the other side of the engine that works the mechanism. Since you are missing part of it, there are some other things too. The switchover mechanism operates some butterflies in the manifold to shut off air flow through the carb in diesel mode and also operated an ignition switch located in a chamber in the front end of the manifold. In diesel mode, the magneto is grounded to stop spark. And of course the lever also works the third valves in the head to reduce the compression ratio for gas operation. I think you should order up yourself a service manual and an operators manual. They explain all this quite well. A parts catalog is nice to have too.

If you could borrow a float from someone you might be able to copy it. They are very simple, just a doughnut of fiber type material. I'm not sure what you could make it out of though.

You can try and IH dealer. However, I think you will end up trying to find your parts at a salvage dealer. I tried to get a float for my MD carb and ended up making do with the one I had. My IH dealer said not any parts available for the MD carbs anymore. As Tim said, the carb on the MD is entirely different than on the gasoline M. Also, as you may have found out the carb is very difficult to get off the manifold because of the location of the bolts on the back side. I suggest replacing those back side bolts with socket head screws to make it easier to get the carb off and back on the manifold
