IH504 problems

We have an IH504 utility gas tractor that's experiencing trouble running smoothly when it gets warm. Being a novice mechanic, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what could be causing my problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated as the tractor really isn't operable at this stage.

Basically, the tractor will start and run for a short while but once it gets nice and warm, it starts sputtering like it is running out of gas. Yesterday I had to pull the choke out to get it back to the shed. I drained and flushed the tank, replaced the fuel bowl assembly, and also pulled and rebuilt the carb (however, this was my first time doing carb work, so that is still suspect). This problem was starting to manifest itself before the carb was rebuilt and I was hoping that would solve the problem, but that didn't work. If the tractor sits for a time, it will run alright for a little while before having troubles again.

On a sidenote, I also went through the ignition system and afterwards, I re-timed the motor. New points, condenser, plugs, wires, and coil were installed. I replaced the factory 6V coil with external resistance with a 12V coil. What is interesting is the voltage across the coil is 12V with the key in the on position, engine off. Once the engine fires, it drops to 6 volts across the coil. I thought it would be a continuous 12V since I took out the external resistance. Am I missing something here?

Again, thanks for any input you might have. This problem has made mowing roadsides a frustrating endeavor this last couple of weeks.

The difference in the coil is that the 12V is internally resisted. The reason for 12 volts before and during start-up is to help it start faster. If you were to have 12 volts at all times, the points wouldn't last. Your problem sounds like low fuel flow. Have you checked the sceen on top of the sediment bowl? Next time it dies, take the plug out of the bottom of the carb and see how much fuel flows out. If you only get a small amount, you've found the problem- junk in the tank, sediment bowl, line, or carb inlet.

I am sure there are far more qualified people who will help you out but I will say that this sounds very much like what was going on with my 350Utility Gas. One thing you did not mention is how long after you start your machine does it start spluttering. For me, I could get about 1.5 minutes at 2/3 throttle before it started to die off on me. If I pulled (closed) the joke as soon as it started to splutter I could get another minute or so out of it. Let it sit for 10 minutes, it would start right up and then go through the same cycle on me. The problem - fuel delivery. I had a mostly plugged fuel system from the tank to the filter screen that was in the bowl. The gas would slowly trickle into the bowl in the bottom of the carb and then the tractor would run until it emptied the carb. To isolate that as the problem I pulled the gas line off the carb and was only getting a slow trickle of gas. I blew all the gunk out of the system by running compressed air backwards through the fuel line into the gas tank. As soon as I did that, the fuel came running out of the line VERY quickly. I then had to solve the problem which as causing the plugged up line - rust in gas tank.

The short version of this is that a slow fuel system will allow the carb to fill when tractor not running and then engine will run well until carb is drained. The fact that pulling your choke allows you to keep it running a little longer points you in the direction of fuel delivery not ignition.

Regards,
Sean

Thanks for all the responses.

The machine can usually run for 6-8 minutes before sputtering out.

I'll check the fuel delivery system again. I did drain and flush the tank once and replaced the sediment bowl, screen, and assembly. Actually, there was no screen in the fuel bowl assembly. That wasn't what I wanted to see. I wonder if it pulled something large into the carb due to lack of a screen? There was some debris in the tank before I flushed it. I think I got most of it out but maybe I missed something. I should probably crack open the carb again. When I did flush the tank, I took the fuel line off at the carb and opened up the valve at the fuel bowl to drain all the fuel. Fuel came out quickly. However, this next time I think I'll also take K.B.'s advice and remove the screw at the bottom of the carb and see how much comes out and then drain the tank again.

Again, thanks to all for the responses. I really appreciate it.

This is just a thought I have had this problem over the years. When it does this loosen the fuel cap and tighten it back to make sure the vent hole is not pluged.

One other thing to check is your intake/exhaust manifold & gasket. If its leaking you could be getting an extremely lean mixture. Just a guess and it doen't hurt to check, you could find out by spraying carb cleaner around it, if it starts to sputter you found your leak. If it doesn't you just cleaned your engine up a little.
