Bush Hog or Sickle mow

I have a approx. 60 acres of a hay crop which looks like it is going to go to waste this year. I had two individuals who were going to cut on shares. One backed out and the other has not shown up and likely won't. I do not have any livestock currently and fences will not hold YET. I have called everyone I know of and everyone seems to have plenty of hay. I hate to see it go to waste, but want to take it down to clean my fields off. I have a 5' bush hog and 7' #31 (I believe)sickle mower for my C Farmall. The bush hog will shred it better, but I can cut much faster with the sickle mower once I get a 3 point adaptor off and the mower on. And the sickle mower is much easier to pull with my small tractors. Hog or sickle mow it??

Why not cut a fire break around it and control burn it to get rid of it?

You are rigt, the bush hog mower would shred it better, but that would take a lot longer than with the sickle mower, especially on 60 acres. I don't think it would hurt much to just mow it and let it lay. The next crop will come up through it, but you may get some old hay in with the new when you rake second crop.

That will be the end of it for this year. Next time it might get hayed will be next summer. It is getting pretty dry at my place. Although some areas in MO have received rain all I got was sprinkles, so I am worried about the fire factor as well, as I have previously had some "spontaneous combustion" occur down along the road if you know what I mean.

The heavier the hay standing the more likely you need to shred it. Seems like a huge waste, even if you offered it for free you would be ahead by your cost of shredding or mowing it.

A lot of people around here use flail cutter to "green chop" hay. The John Deere model allows you to open up a cover above the auger to flail to the ground. The direct chopper we had had a removable plate for the same purpose.

My ten acre field in PA is still in Timothy hay, the neighbor broke his mo-co and had to wait 3 weeks for a part, the hay headed and was not cut. Like you I agree its a fire hazard. He probably will bush hog it and I'll pay him. Ideally, I'd love to have it Flail Mowed, and cut into small pieces, but other than the State Highway dept., no one uses flail mowers, as they are just used for cutting grass. Same boat, good luck.
