Just got my "new" M. There is no tachometer on it. Was there one originally? If not how do I know my PTO speed?
Thanks for any help

no tach on an M. The PTO speed is 540 RPM at full speed.

Tom: Most of the old gas Farmall I had before the days of tachometers tended to be on the slow side of 540 as they were set from factory. The best inexpensive check was the plunger strokes on a baler.

Wayne's right, Yur M is supposed to have a full load engine RPM of 1450 RPM, and a PTO speed of 537 or 539 PTO RPM at full load. But at no load, the engine MAY run as fast as 1595 RPM with a PTO RPM of 595 rpm. But I think You'd need a really steep hill with a big load pushing You to get the engine running that fast.

All tractors will run somewhat faster than their rated PTO speed (Rated 540 for example may run @ 570-580) until a load is applied.
The manufacturer's rated PTO is set under load conditions.

Yes, assuming your tractor is not overspeeding.

I run a JD 348 baler on an M, the baler book calls for 80 strokes per minute, and at full throttle, under load, I get close to 100 strokes per minute.

I run the tractor at part throttle and get better results with the baler.

I have never measured the tractor RPM, or the PTO, but if mine can run fast so can yours. Run the tractor at the speed that works the implement well.
