H rear wheel distance [tire width] on axle

On my '40 H, the rear wheels are set at two different postitons on the axle. L/side has about 10" of axle sticking out, the R/side has about 16" of axle sticking out.

QUESTION: What is the popular, or prefered width for the back tires to be set at on the axle?

Thanks, Bill

Bill: I personally wouldn't take a Farmall to the field set any narrower than 72" center to center. Those tractors are high and for field work require the width for stability.

There are 2 general widths, but an infinite number of possibilities. One is to set the rears 56" center to center. That is 28" from centerline of the tractor. To get this width, it is best to have the castings dished inward. You can also set them 60" center to center, or 30" to CL. You can get 30" CL and wider with the castings dished out, but you also have more axle showing. Weights are also easier to hang in the dished in position. It just depends on what you plan to do with the tractor. There is no right width. Thats why they're adjustable. I have my H set on 56" center to center as it fits the trailer better.

Are both your axles the same? The standard axle projects 14" from the housing. Obviously, at least one of yours is the optional 100" axle which projects 24". The long axle cannot be seen from the seat if the wheel is not set out and becomes a gatepost buster. My solution was to add an extra wheel.

If you don't have to match row spacing or mower width then it's mostly personal preference. I think that wider is more stable, but too wide looks spindly. I don't like to have the axles sticking out past the tires, but I did have to slide the wheels in all the way to fit on a trailer. Nice thing about this kind of axle is how easy it is to adjust. Change on a whim.
