I drained the old transmission fluid (only about 1/2 gal came out). I refilled with new fluid and soon saw the new fluid leaking around the axle seals. I can see why it only had 1/2 gal left. My question is how difficult is it to replace the rear seals? Also, it is leaking around the pto shaft. Am I in over my head? Thanks for all your help. Mark

I replaced the Drive line seal, the belly pump shaft seal, and both rear axle seals on my H,Cost was about 80-100 bucks. The rear outer axle seals were replaced by removing the rear wheels and hubs then unbolting the outer axle seal hub.I picked up the parts on a Tuesday and had the tractor back together on Sunday. Good luck, Dave

Are you aware there is more than one place to drain the fluid on an H? If you don't drain them all you will not get all of the oil out.

How much oil did you put in? What I'm getting at is if you didn't get it all drained and then put in 6 gallons, you would be way overfilled.

What type of fluid did you use? If you used Hy-tran, it will leak more than 80/90 would.

I see now that there is a drain under the PTO. I drained out of the front. I filled it just so it started to drain out of the overfill. The rear axle seals leak. How difficult is it to replace those gaskets?

Thank you,

Mark

HA HA I did this too my 1st time. I drained the front plug and thought "wow they really let that run low" I then put in 6 gals of 80/90 and had leaks all over.
I found the rear plug as I was getting ready to replace the tranny seals. I got alot more than 6 gals out of it. I didnt need new tranny seals just had it over full, but what the heck I had purchased them any way.

It's not really hard, just time consuming. Everything is very heavy. You need to replace the rear axle seals, which requires taking the axles loose from the bull gears. Some people are able to do this by removing the PTO and working thru the hole. They also cut the new gasket (at the top) that fits between the axle housing and rear end housing. I have not done it that way. The only other option is to remove the transmission rear end cover, then remove the axles and housings and replace the seals and gaskets. I have done this on two tractors (4 axles) by myself with the aid of an engine hoist. The PTO is an easy fix.
