What's better for a 140, pull type or 3pt bush hog

I've got a 140 and would like to use a pull type bush hog with it. I understand that there's some trouble with turning with a pull type cutter. I've got about 4 acres to cut a couple of times a year with a good bit of turning involved. Should I just bite the bullet and get a 3pt hitch for the 140? I've got a "free" 5ft cutter that needs deck repairs that I'd like to fix and use. The belly mower I have is just about shot and couldn't handle the thick bull grass I've got to cut. Would I have to take the pto out of gear every time I'd turn? Thanks for any advice! Jacques

I use my 140 with a 1 pt mower. Cut about 4 acre of grass and brush. Had a 8 ft pull behind for my 200 and did not like it too much, couldn't make the sharper turns that I had too. Aftermarket 3pt hitches are easy to install and run less than $300. I would suggest changing out the bolts that attach the lift arms for a set of cat 1 pins if you plan on switching back and forth between 1 pt. & 3 pt.

Chris Va, excuse my ignorance, but what is a 1pt mower? Does it have 2 trailing wheels and is it attached to the hitch so that the gearbox on the mower is always in line with the pto shaft? If you have a 3pt hitch, why not just use a 3pt mower? Is a 1pt mower raised/lowered by the hitch or is it done by cranking it up or down like a drag type mower? Is a 1pt mower still made? Thanks for the advice!

The 1 pt hitch is the factory hitch that came on the A - 140. It has a socket that the spear on the piece of equipment fits into. All you do is back up to the equipment, the spear goes into the socket and the latch drops to hold it in place, you never leave the seat. These mowers are still available from agrisupply (www.agri-supply.com), they also have several stores in the virginia and carolina area. The reason I switch back and forth is I have several pieces of 1 pt as well as 3 pt. equipment (takes about 5 minutes to switch out). Email me if you'd like some pics.

I pull a 72-inch Bush Hog "Squealer", recommended for the 140 by Bush Hog. Not for use around a lot of trees and will not turn tight, but cuts great and eats rocks with only minor complaint. Switched about 7 years ago when I couldn't get parts for the original 1966 C-4 IH/Danco belly mount. Hated taking it off to mount the snow plow.

The pull-type will work great just hook it off-set so the pto is running straight. That way you can turn just dont turn too sharp as any pto will cause trouble.

Some one will probably correct me, as I have a Super A with a belly mower, no bush hog, trailing or mounted. I would think you would have more wear with the offset pto with a mounted one. As to trailing, I have broken PTO shafts (stupidity) with trailing mowers, etc on modern tractors. Just be careful turning, your acceptable turning radius will probably be different, left or right, because of the offset pto.
